2010 Season Preview: The 2010 men’s volleyball team enters the season knowing that it must start strong and finish even stronger. Last year’s team has many things to be proud of including being ranked in the AVCA Top 15 poll, finishing second in the NECVA Western Division (6-2) and making the conference tournament for a sixth straight year. The players feel that they need to resolve some unfinished business. The seniors have yet to win a conference playoff match. First-team All-Division player Ryan Murdie (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East), Ryan Metz (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Andy Nawotka (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) have lost in the first round of the playoffs in each of their first three seasons. They are determined to not let that happen their senior year. This year’s team has a good mix of senior leadership and talented underclassmen. Competition for playing time is going to be fierce as this could be the deepest team that Medaille has ever had. Junior setter Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and sophomore setter Sam Arnold (East Aurora,NY/East Aurora) will make major contributions this year. Other key returners include Second-team All-Division libero Dan Jackson (Hamburg,NY/Hamburg), Tom Kotrys (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara Wheatfield), Steve Klein (Eden,NY/Eden) and Matt Kremer (Lancaster,NY/Lancaster). A talented class of newcomers will also contribute to this year’s team. Nick Johnson (Buffalo,NY/Canisius), Dave Girts (Falconer,NY/Falconer) and Erin Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) will look to make an immediate impact. The team begins its regular season in January with a trip to New Hampshire to face three conference opponents. First the team will face Lasell College, then play last year’s conference #1 seed, Rivier College and will then face the team that defeated the Mavericks in the playoffs, Baruch College. This year the team will also play local division rivals D’Youville College and Hilbert College as well as Stevens Institute of Technology (2009 NECVA champion), Nazareth College (2009 NECVA Runner-Up), Vassar College (2008 NECVA Champion), Division II Pfeiffer University and Division I Sacred Heart.
2009 Season Preview
The men’s volleyball team comes into the 2009 season motivated to get back to the top of Division III volleyball. The Mavericks (15-18 Overall; 5-3 NECVA Western Division) qualified for the conference tournament for a fifth consecutive year and were nationally ranked during the majority of the season. Although the team earned its first ever birth to the ECAC tournament, the players will not be satisfied unless they earn another bid to the Molten Championships. This year’s team will be lead by a trio of juniors; Ryan Metz (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), Ryan Murdie (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East) and Andrew Nawotka (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Sophomores Dan Jackson (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) will also be expected to contribute to the team’s success. Some talented recruits and transfer students will round out the roster for this season. The players on the 2009 men’s volleyball team are hungry for success and they know that they must work together to achieve their goal of making an appearance in the Molten Championships. “100% effort, 100% of the time” is the motto for the 2009 men’s volleyball team. The team begins the season by traveling to the Midwest to participate in the Wisconsin Invitational. The Mavericks will battle local teams Carthage College and Milwaukee School of Engineering while also facing conference foes Endicott College and Rivier College. The team will then begin divisional play against local rivals D’Youville and Hilbert as well as Nazareth and SUNY IT. Other top teams on the schedule include Vassar, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hunter and Eastern Mennonite. All in all this year’s team will play over fifteen matches against nationally ranked opponents.
