2009 Season Review

bennettUnder the tutelage of first year head coach Chaz Bulera the Medaille College men’s lacrosse team reached new heights.  The team finished with a (7-9) record and reached the NEAC Championship game.  The seven wins is the most in program history.  After a rough (0-5) start to the season the Mavs finshed by winning seven of their final eleven contests, including a pair of double overtime victories against Oberlin College and Washington & Jefferson College.  Senior midfielder David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)(pictured) shattered the record book by setting new marks for goals in a season (40), points in a season (63), career goals (98), career assists (79), and career points (177).  He earned NEAC Player of the Week honors twice and was a first team all conference selection.  Joining him on the first team was sophomore attacker Joe Glieco (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) who was second on the team in scoring with (30) goals and (15) assists. Junior defender Joe Dishaw (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) also earned first team honors for his strong defensive play, he also was second on the team with (57) ground balls.  Two Mavs were named second team all conference as senior goaltender Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) finished his stellar career as the all time saves leader with (676). While sophomore attacker Jim Luthart (Amherst, NY/Amherst) had a strong 2009 campaign as he scored (15) goals and dished out (18) helpers.  Freshman long stick midfielder Caleb Higgins (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had a tremendous rookie campaign as he scooped up a team high (63) ground balls and was locked on the oppositions top midfielder all season long.  The Mavs will have some big shoes to fill as they see the departure of Bennett and Dlugosh along with Jeff Zacharias (Kirkville, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) (20 goals).  A nice core of returners coupled with a strong recruiting class should see the Mavs improve upon 2009.
