The Medaille Mavericks Men’s Soccer Program will begin their eighth season under head coach Daniel J. Krzyzanowicz seeking an unprecedented fifth consecutive undefeated AMCC Regular Season Conference Championship and fourth trip to the NCAA tournament.
Coach K led the Mavericks to their 4th Consecutive Undefeated Regular Season Conference Championship in 2008. During the 2008 season the Mavericks played five opponents that were NCAA teams and had a rough start. Once the team hit their stride they ended up in a familiar place winning the conference regular season for the fourth time and hosting the conference playoff championship for the 4th straight year. In Coach K’s seven seasons as the head coach at Medaille, he has led his team to the conference championship six times. The 2008 season had another exciting finish losing a very hard fought match (2-1) in overtime to the 2008 DIII National Champions Messiah College in the NCAA Tournament. In that match they led (1-0) most of the match over the National Champions.
During his seven seasons at the college his teams have compiled a (96-32-12) record and he has an incredible 73% winning percentage. Even more impressive than that is the Maverick Record of (39-1-4) versus AMCC conference opponents over the past four seasons. He is the school’s all-time leader in career wins and winning percentage. Under Coach K’s steady guidance the Mavericks have broken every single season and career record in school history. Coach K has guided 3 All-Americans, 1 Scholar All-American, 13 Regional All-Americans, 11 Scholar Regional All-Americans, 4 Conference Players of the Year, 2 Conference Preseason Players of the Year, 3 Conference Newcomers of the Year, 38 All-Conference performers and over 50 Academic All-Conference Players as well. Coach Krzyzanowicz was named the 2005 and 2002 Conference Coach of the Year.
Perhaps his finest season yet was 2006; when the Mavericks broke the school record for wins with 20, they finished 20-1-1 (9-0 AMCC) overall record, and a (.932) overall winning percentage captured their second straight AMCC Regular Season and Post-Season Championship, en route to their 2nd straight NCAA tournament berth. That season Medaille was one of eight schools in the nation to receive a 1st round bye in the NCAA tournament. They obtained the bye, because of their #1 Regional Ranking. They finished the 2006 season ranked #20 in the nation according to d3kicks. In 2006, his Mavericks became the 1st and still the only athletic team in Medaille College history to host an NCAA Tournament Match.
Coach K’s 2006 team also set the NCAA all-time scoring record with 110 goals in the season giving them the NCAA record of a 5.0 GPG average. This surge was led in part by the NCAA Division III scoring champion and 1st Team All-American senior Ryan Mangano and senior Cory Cwiklinski (2nd Team All-American). Both Cwiklinski and Mangano were NCAA Scoring Champions, All-Americans, and prestigious 40 goal- 40 assist members during their illustrious Medaille Soccer Careers. Medaille Soccer players and team appear numerous times in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Record Book.
In 2001 Coach K was named head coach of the Ripley (NY) High School boys varsity soccer team. Under his tutelage, the team qualified for the Section VI finals and broke five school records. He also held the varsity track head coaching position at Frankfort (New York) High School in 1999 — the first year of the school’s track program — and mentored several section finalists while the team finished second in the conference. Coach K is a very active member of the local community, as he has been volunteering his time for 13 years as a coach for the NCSA soccer organization in Chautauqua County and the Clarence Soccer Club.
Coach K has worked some of the most prestigious soccer camps in the country including Indiana University and Akron University. During those camps Coach K increased his knowledge, coaching with some of the top Division I coaches in the country and current Major League Soccer (MLS) players. Coach K holds a NSCAA Premier, Advanced National, and National Diploma and received a Masters degree from Medaille College in 2003, a Bachelor’s degree from Defiance College in 2001 and an Associate’s degree from Herkimer County Community College in 1998. He was a two-year starter on the Defiance College soccer team and participated in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
Associate Head Coach: Lou Vitello (6th year)
Coach Vitello is entering his 6th year as the associate head coach of the men’s soccer team. He brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the Mavericks program. He is the Director of Coaching and Development with the Clarence Soccer Club. Coach Vitello spent six years as the boy’s varsity soccer coach and won six league championships and two sectional championships. He also was an assistant coach in 2003 to the women’s soccer team at Medaille, before joining the men’s team in 2004. Coach Vitello holds the USSF Coaching License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and NSCAA National Youth Diploma. Coach Vitello holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Buffalo.
Assistant Coaches:
Charles Woods (5th Year)Coach Woods is entering his third season as a Mavericks assistant and brings with him an impressive college playing career. The ’04 graduate of Medaille College, Coach Woods played 2 seasons under current head Coach Dan Krzyzanowicz. During his 2 seasons at Medaille he was named all-conference 1st team both years and conference newcomer of the year his first season. In total, Coach Woods ranked in the top 25 in the nation in assists and points 3 seasons, won 3 MVP awards, 4 all-conference teams, 3 all-region teams, and lead his team in points 3 times.
Perhaps the most accomplished player to ever don the Medaille College soccer kit, Andrew is returning to the program he helped guide to their first NCAA berth this time as a member of the coaching staff. Andrew spent this past season playing for Queen City Futbol club, an NPSL league team and helped lead the team to the NPSL National Championship match, it’s first season of existence. For his efforts the starting center back was selected the team’s CO-MVP. As a Maverick player Andrew was a 4 time all-conference player, 2nd team Regional All-American in 2005, Medaille College Male Athlete of the Year in 2005, Team MVP 2005, 1st team all star in Infosport Pro Combine 2005, and was the 1st Medaille Athlete ever to be drafted by a professional team when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Wave Professional Soccer Team in 2006. He also served as Interim head coach U-13 Buffalo United Soccer Club in 2006.
Cory is returning to Medaille for his third season as an assistant coach on the team he was a two-time captain of. During his illustrious playing career, Cory was quite possibly the most decorated player in school history. Cory was a 2-time All-American, 2-time Conference Player of the Year, 2003 NCAA National Scoring Champion, and 4-time All-Conference Member. His name is also in the NCAA Record book 6 times, including being named to the prestigious 40-40 club.
