2009 Review:
The 2009 season brought another dominant performance from the Mavericks as they captured their fifth straight undefeated AMCC Regular Season Championship.  They took that momentum into the AMCC Tournament and captured their fourth crown in the last five years with a (1-0) win over Penn State-Behrend.  That victory catapulted the Mavs into their fourth NCAA Tournament where they got their first tournament victory in a (3-0) pasting of Denison University in the tournaments opening round.  The Mavs would fall (1-0) courtesy of a penalty kick to #10 Carnegie Mellon University on the Tartans home field in the NCAA Tournament second round.  The Mavs finished with a sparkling (18-3-2) overall record and a (9-0-1) AMCC mark.  One of the highlights of the season came off the foot of Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) who became the NCAA’s all time assists leader on a helper in a (8-1) win over Wells College.  He would tack on a heaping more throughout the season, ending his career with a ridiculous (82) assists, that is (20) more than the previous mark of (62).  Boughton would garner AMCC Player of the Year honors as well as being named First Team All region by the NSCAA and earning Academic All American honors for the second straight season.  Senior Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) had another stellar season which landed him on the NSCAA All American 3rd Team, he is the fourth Mav to receive such a high distinction.  Another milestone moment came on the sideline as head coach Daniel Krzyzanowicz reached the 100 win plateau in a (6-0) thumping of Alvernia University in the Cialella Classic hosted by Rutgers-Camden.  He now has (113) wins in his remarkable Medaille career. He also garnered AMCC Coach of the Year honors for his terrific season.  The Mavs posted (17) shutouts in 2009 while outscoring their opponents (88-6).  They put together a stretch of eleven games spanning (43) days where they did not allow a goal.  Sophomore Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) handled the majority of the goaltending load, allowing only five goals in (18) games played.  The AMCC All Conference Teams were riddled with Maverick players as Boughton, McFayden, Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) and Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland) all landed on the 1st Team.  Second Team honors were garenered by Stuart Ziegler (West Plains, NY/West Plains) and Goettel.  A pair of Mavericks were named to the AMCC Honorable Mention squad with George Tor (Lagos, Nigeria) and Nick Cavalieri (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) picking up those accolades.  The Mavs will have to replace alot of veteran leadership and tremendous skill players in the 2010 season but they will return four of their top six scorers along with all of their goaltenders, which shines a bright light on the future of Medaille’s most successful sports program.  They will begin their quest for a sixth straight AMCC title when training begins in late August of 2010.

2009 Preview:
The Medaille Mavericks Men’s Soccer Program enters the 2009 season with visions of a 5th Consecutive AMCC Regular Season Conference Championship and goals of a successful run in the NCAA tournament. They will return 8 starters and 19 varsity letter winners from the 2008 squad that won a 4th Consecutive Undefeated Regular Season AMCC Conference Championship and followed that with a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the 3rd time in the last 4 seasons. This 2009 senior class will be entering the fall 2009 with a 3 year career record of an unbelievable 51 wins, 10 losses and 3 ties. Leading the team will be six very experienced seniors: Head Captain Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland), Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), Mike Antkowiak (Williamsville, NY/ Clarence), Scott Gentner (Buffalo, NY/ St. Joseph Collegiate Academy) and junior John Seifert (East Amherst, NY/Clarence).

“We have outstanding senior leadership in Head Captain Gary Boughton, who will be captaining the squad for the second straight season and the rest of our senior class will also have a large part in the development of our new players.  They have created a culture of winning and it will be the senior’s responsibility to pass that on to the new players as it was passed onto them.  We have a very good group of returners that has worked hard and had a great deal of success; we hope that will drive to achieve higher levels of success in 2009,” says Coach K.

The teams winning percentage during the past three seasons of 82% ranks them among the elite in NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer during that time period. The Mavericks have dominated AMCC Men’s soccer over the past three seasons with a record of 25 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties during the regular season.

Coach K. states, “the AMCC men’s soccer teams have improved every year over the past four seasons and we expect no less this coming season.  We have won the regular season crown for the past four seasons, but will need to work very hard this season to achieve our goal of five straight”.

The Mavericks have again followed their extremely strong 2008 schedule with another difficult and challenging schedule in 2009.  In 2008 the Mavericks played 5 NCAA and nationally ranked opponents and the 2009 schedule will see them taking on eight opponents that have appeared in the NCAA tournament during the past two years.  The men’s soccer challenging non-conference schedule should serve as excellent preparation for a rigorous AMCC conference schedule.

“We are very fortunate to have so many good teams on our schedule this year and I believe our team will be ready for the challenge that a difficult schedule creates.  It will force us to maintain high levels of play in every match.  I think the players are very excited and looking forward to playing many of these opponents!  As always, I believe the key to any success we will have this year will be our team chemistry and desire,” states Coach K.

Varsity Reserve Team
Medaille will be entering their fifth season of JV play in order to give more opportunities to play soccer to student-athletes. They will be playing local reserve teams (Robert Wesleyan and Houghton) and junior colleges
