2009 Review: The Medaille College golf team will have to look to 2010 in hopes of an AMCC Championship as they fell short in 2009.  The Mavs finished 5th at the Conference Championships and were unable to wrap up any tournament titles this past fall.  Their best finish came at the Spartan Shootout hosted by D’Youville College as the Mavs finished in second place just four shots behind Erie Community College.  Their best team score of the season came in the opener as they blasted a (325) at the Pitt-Bradford Invitational.  The best individual round came from Second Team All Conference selection John Haberman (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) as he shot a (74) at Behrend landing him in sixth place at that tournament.  Haberman was the low scorer for the Mavs in five of their nine rounds of golf.  While E.J. Kuebler (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) placed second at the Spartan Shootout as he carded an (81) and led the Mavs three times with low scores in 2009.  The Mavs finished in fourth place in the 2nd Annual Medaille Fall Invitational at their home course (Glen Oak G.C.) as they shot a (333) as a team with sophomore Mark Jaccarino (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) shot a team best (81) in that one, good for 12th place overall.  The Mavs will head into spring play with a full roster and the 2010 fall season will see the entire squad return which will be complimented by a few new recruits as coach John Edholm  seeks the programs first conference title.

2009 Preview: The Medaille golf team is currently practicing and getting ready for the Fall 2009 campaign.  After finishing 2nd and 3rd during the past two AMCC Championships, Medaille continues to work toward one goal, an AMCC Championship. This year’s team is young with no returning seniors on the squad.  Returning Junior John Haberman (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) and Sophomore E.J. Kuebler (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) (pictured) have the most tournament experience and are expected to be the number 1 and number 2 golfers this season.  Coaches Edholm and Davis have high expectations for two newcomers to the team, Sophomore transfer Mark Jaccarino (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and Sophomore Brett Hart.  Junior Mike Licata (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) has shown some flashes of excellence and is being counted on to be a steady contributor.  Rounding out the squad and competing for tournament playing time are Nick Beardi (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Garrett Layton (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Matt Detota (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).

                           ONE TEAM—-ONE GOAL—-THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP!

Fall 2008 Review: Medaille kicked off the Fall 2008 Season with a 4th place finish at the Pitt-Bradford Invitational finishing 4th out of 13 schools firing a team score of 326.  John Haberman and E.J. Kuebler led the way with each shooting 79.  The next tournament was hosted by Penn State-Altoona at Iron Masters C.C., Medaille’s squad was short handed and finished a disappointing 7th out of 10 competitors.  Aaron Jantzi was low for Medaille with a 78.

Daemen College hosted their invitational at Gowanda C.C.  Medaille finished 1st out of the five schools competing, shooting a team 316.  Aaron Jantzi and E.J. Kuebler each shot 77.

The next tournament held at Peak ‘N Peek was hosted by Penn State-Behrend.  Medaille finished 4th out of 13 schools participating.  The team set a school record with a team score of 304 (average 76 per golfer).  Aaron Jantzi led the way shooting a 2 under par 70.  John Haberman added in with a 73.

Medaille hosted its first Fall Invitational at Sheridan Park Golf Course in late September.  Medaille finished first for the second time this season with a team score of 317.  This was one stroke better than runner-up Daemen.  E.J. Kuebler and John Haberman were co-medalists with scores of 75.

D’Youville hosted their tournament at Springville C.C. and Medaille finished 1st again for the third time this season with a score of 318.  Aaron Jantzi led the way with 74.

The AMCC Championship was held at Tom’s Run in Blairsville, PA.  Eight schools were competing in this 2 day tournament.  Medaille shot a team 322 on day one positioning itself in 3rd place.  On day two, Medaille slipped to 332, but managed to hold onto 3rd place.  Penn State-Altoona won for the 3rd consecutive year with a two day total of 620.  Aaron Jantzi led Medaille on day one with a 76 and Joe Kushner was low for Medaille on day two with an 80.

The golf team was short-handed this past season, but still managed to finish 1st three times.  Coaches Edholm and Davis plan to carry 10 golfers next season to facilitate increased competition and allow for longer-term player development.  Both coaches feel that the golf team has a solid core and sees no reason that we cannot win the Conference Championship next season.

At the season’s conclusion Aaron Jantzi was named to the All Conference First Team, John Haberman to the second team and E.J. Kuebler received an honorable mention.

Anyone interested in joining the golf team should contact the coaches.
