The Medaille College women’s basketball team saw its magical run end in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament as they fell victim to one of the nations top teams, #7 Marymount University, losing (74-44) in Arlington, VA. The Lady Mavs were able to keep pace early but the size, speed and skill of the Saints proved to be too much as the hosts turned their ten point halftime lead into a thirty point victory. The Lady Mavs fought hard all evening (and all year) as they showed the grit that led them to a program tying record of (26) victories. Playing in her final game at Medaille, Tiffany Sullivan (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy)(pictured), tied a team high with (9) points while dishing out (5) assists. Junior forward Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) also tallied nine while grabbing (5) rebounds. The Lady Mavs faced a lineup that featured only one player under (5′9″) in the top nine players on the depth chart and that size effected their ability to get off quality shots and Marymount owned the glass, outrebounding Medaille (45-23). Th0se things coupled with (50%) shooting from the floor by the Saints, led to the Lady Mavs demise. The Lady Mavs had dominated the paint for the majority of the season but the Saints would buck that trend as they outscored Medaille (38-14) in the lane en route to the win. The loss ends Medaille’s season at (26-3) but it kept intact their dominance over the AMCC over their six year tenure in the league. The Lady Mavs have won four AMCC Regular Season and Tournament titles over that span. They have also made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of four appearances.

The calendar says it’s March and in the world of college basketball that means madness. The Medaille College women’s basketball team faced Lebanon Valley College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament this evening at Marymount University and they would need a furious comeback to upend the Lady Dutchmen (64-63). Most of the game was owned by Lebanon Valley as they dictated play through most of the minutes. The game was tied at (8-8) with (14:19) remaining in the first half when Lebanon Valley began to pull away. They would grab their largest lead of the game (32-21) with (2:58) remaining in the opening frame, before heading into the break with a (34-27) lead over Medaille. The Lady Mavs came out of the locker room a bit sluggish to start the second half as Lebanon Valley kept them at arms length to hang on to their lead. As the game wore on the Lady Mavs would whittle away at the Lebanon Valley lead before finally going in front with (00:54) seconds remaining in the game as Kacie Mills (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East)(pictured) drilled a three pointer that would give Medaille a (60-59) edge. The Lady Mavs were incredible from behind the arc in this game as they connected on (52.9%) from behind the arc. The Dutchmen would push the ball down the floor on the ensuing possession drawing a foul and connecting on both free throws to take a (61-60) lead. On the next trip down the floor Tiffany Sullivan (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) would draw a foul going to the basket and she was clutch, knocking down a pair from the charity stripe to give the Lady Mavs a (62-61) lead. The back and forth game of free throw shooting continued as time was quickly elapsing, Lebanon Valley again grabbed the lead on a pair of free throws (63-62) with (00:16) left on the clock. Again it would be Mills that would give Medaille the lead, this time for good, as she converted on a layup with three seconds left to send the Lady Mavs to the Second Round of the tournament for the third time in school history. Mills would finish with a game high (17) points and (6) assists as she connected on (6 of 11) from the field, including knocking down (5 of 7) from behind the arc. Both Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, NY/Nichols) and Sullivan would tally (12) points apiece to help lead the Lady Mavs to victory. The win puts Medaille at (26-2) which matches a program best for victories in a season. It also marks the 150th win for head coach Pete Lonergan on the sidelines for the Lady Mavs as his record as a Division III women’s basketball coach stands at (150-42). The Lady Mavs will take on Marymount University, a (57-41) winner over the University of Scranton, tomorrow (3/6) at 7:00pm.

The Lady Mavs came into today’s AMCC Championship game undefeated this season in conference play. Pitt-Bradford came into today as the AMCC’s Cinderella story; only one happy ending would be realized. In the end, David couldn’t conquer Goliath as Medaille(25-2, 20-0) would cut down the nets for the fourth time in five years, with a (59-52) victory over the seventh seeded Lady Panthers in front of the home crowd at the Sullivan Center. It would not be an easy road to the championship as the Lady Mavs would struggle from the field early, even shooting as low as (25%) at one point in the first half. Medaille would take its first lead of the game at the (8) minute mark of the first half on a fast break lay in by senior guard Tiffany Sullivan (Penfield, NY / Nazareth Academy)(pictured). Sullivan would come up big in this stretch, going on a (10-0) run by herself, she would end the game with a team high (16) points, (10) rebounds and (3) steals. Medaille would come out of the gate in the second half like a rocket, starting the final frame with a (10-3) run to extend the Lady Mavs lead to double-digits. However, the Lady Panthers, after upsetting both the second and third ranked teams in the tournament, would not go down without a fight. Bradford would go on an (11-0) run over a six and a half minute period to cut the lead to just (3), placing all the pressure on the conferences top team. The Lady Mavs would respond as sophomore guard Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, NY/Nichols) came up with a monstrous and-one opportunity to put Medaille up (5) with (25.6) seconds remaining. With the game one the line, the Lady Mavericks hustle would prove too much for the visiting Lady Panthers. Medaille would gain possession of every loose ball, including a game clinching steal from Mameyaa Ankoma-Mensa (Brampton, ONT/D’Youville) with (19) seconds left to seal the Lady Mavs fourth trip to the NCAA tournament in five years. The Lady Mavs will find out their first round match-up on Monday morning, when the NCAA reveals its field of (64).

For the fourth time in five seasons, the Lady Mavericks (24-2, 20-0) will host the AMCC tournament championship courtesy of a (71-57) win over Penn State-Altoona (20-7, 14-6) Friday afternoon in the first women‘s semi-final. Both teams started the game off a little shaky as the first three possessions of the game resulted in turnovers. The two teams combined for just (5) points and (2) field goals in the first (3) minutes. While both offenses were sputtering early, the Mavs interior defense was setting the tone for the rest of the game with two blocks and holding the Lady Lions to just (4) points in the first (6) minutes of the game. Turnovers were the story of the first half, with Medaille racking up (12) and Altoona giving it away (9) times. Altoona would keep it close in the first half, tying the game at (20) with (7:47) left in the first half on a great offensive effort, stealing the ball twice in the offensive zone and capitalizing on a two-on-one. However, that would be the closest it would get as just one minute later Tanisha Travis (Rochester, NY/Fairport) (pictured) came up with a monstrous block, her third of the game, on Kristen Kos and converted a strong post move on the other end to make it a (4) point game and steal all the momentum. Travis would finish the game with (6) blocks to go along with (21) points and (12) boards to lead the Lady Mavs into the Championship game. Coming out of the break, both teams would start off the exact opposite way they started in the first, scoring a combined (14) points in the first 4 minutes. Altoona would hang tough; however, missed shots and turnovers would prove costly as the Lady Mavs would go on a (22-8) run over an (11:20) time period including back-to-back triples from Kacie Mills (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East), who would finish with (15) points and (5) assists, and Jordan Schrimmel (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) at the (9) minute mark to all but seal the victory. The win improves Medaille’s overall record to (24-2), and they will now face the number (7) seeded Pitt-Bradford after the Lady Panthers pulled off the upset over number (3) Frostburg State 62-59. Tip-off is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, February 27 at 1:00pm in the Sullivan Center.
