The Empire State Games came to Buffalo, NY in 2010 and several current and former Maverick athlete’s had strong showings. A pair of seniors led their respective teams to gold medals as Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home)(pictured) was the starting setter on the Western Region men’s volleyball squad that defended their gold from the 2008 games. While Gina Pera (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was strong for the Western women’s soccer team that claimed gold as well. Sophomore transfer Kara Donner (Springville, NY/Springville-Griffith) was a member of that team as well. Two former Lady Maverick women’s basketball players had critical roles on the silver medal winning Western team as Marisa Clark (Hilton, NY/Hilton)(’08) and Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata)(’09) provided a strong backcourt during the tournament en route to their runner-up finish. Sophomore Kevin Au (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and incoming freshman Gregory Hoffman (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) each played for the Western region in the men’s soccer tournament, with Au registering an assist in their win over New York City. The Western region continued their dominance of the games as they won the medal count again with (242) including a remarkable (104) golds.

The Lady Mavs fought hard all evening (and all year) as they showed the grit that led them to a program tying record of (26) victories. (more…)

The Lady Mavs came into today’s AMCC Championship game undefeated this season in conference play. Pitt-Bradford came into today as the AMCC’s Cinderella story; only one happy ending would be realized. In the end, David couldn’t conquer Goliath as Medaille(25-2, 20-0) would cut down the nets for the fourth time in five years, with a (59-52) victory over the seventh seeded Lady Panthers in front of the home crowd at the Sullivan Center. It would not be an easy road to the championship as the Lady Mavs would struggle from the field early, even shooting as low as (25%) at one point in the first half. Medaille would take its first lead of the game at the (8) minute mark of the first half on a fast break lay in by senior guard Tiffany Sullivan (Penfield, NY / Nazareth Academy)(pictured). Sullivan would come up big in this stretch, going on a (10-0) run by herself, she would end the game with a team high (16) points, (10) rebounds and (3) steals. (more…)

For the fourth time in five seasons, the Lady Mavericks (24-2, 20-0) will host the AMCC tournament championship courtesy of a (71-57) win over Penn State-Altoona (20-7, 14-6) Friday afternoon in the first women‘s semi-final. Both teams started the game off a little shaky as the first three possessions of the game resulted in turnovers. The two teams combined for just (5) points and (2) field goals in the first (3) minutes. While both offenses were sputtering early, the Mavs interior defense was setting the tone for the rest of the game with two blocks and holding the Lady Lions to just (4) points in the first (6) minutes of the game. Turnovers were the story of the first half, with Medaille racking up (12) and Altoona giving it away (9) times. Altoona would keep it close in the first half, tying the game at (20) with (7:47) left in the first half on a great offensive effort, stealing the ball twice in the offensive zone and capitalizing on a two-on-one. However, that would be the closest it would get as just one minute later Tanisha Travis (Rochester, NY/Fairport) (pictured) came up with a monstrous block, her third of the game, on Kristen Kos and converted a strong post move on the other end to make it a (4) point game and steal all the momentum.
