Senior Andrew Nawotka (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island)(pictured) started the 2010 season on the sideline with an injury. He is healthy now and his performance last week earned him NECVA Western Division Player of the Week honors. The Mavericks went (2-1) last week and Nawotka led the way as he posted (43) kills while hitting at a (.381) clip. Even more impressive was his defensive effort at the net where he came up with (19) total blocks. The Mavs are currently (16-8) on the year and are ranked 9th in the AVCA (national) poll and 5th in the NECVA (conference) rankings. The Mavs will head to Stevenson University this weekend to take part in their tournament. They will face Division II Pfeiffer University at 7:00pm on Friday (3/12).

The Medaille College men’s volleyball team hosted a tri-match this afternoon in the Sullivan Center that included Newbury College and Rivier College. The Mavs faced Newbury in the opening match and the result of that match was a sign of things to come as Medaille earned a hard fought (3-2); (30-18, 27-30, 25-30, 30-12, 20-18) victory. A milestone moment occured in the fourth set of that match when senior Ryan Metz (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale)(pictured) became the all time kills leader in program history when he pounded out the (1,155th) kill of his illustrious career, he finished the match with (16). The #8 Medaille College men’s volleyball team got back on track after stumbling in a quad match this past weekend at Baruch, with a (3-0); (30-24, 30-26, 30-25) victory over crosstown and divisional rival D’Youville College on “Senior Night” in the Sullivan Center. The Mavs hit very well as a team finishing with a kill percentage of (.387) while the Spartans only managed to hit at a (.144) clip. They also defended the D’Youville attack well as they registered (11.5) blocks on the night. (more…)

After a ten day hiatus the fifth ranked Medaille College men’s volleyball team got right back to work, quickly disposing of NECVA Western Division foe Hilbert College (3-0); (30-15, 30-14, 30-21) in the Sullivan Center. All fourteen players on the Maverick roster contributed in the victory as the team hit at a remarkable (.568) clip. Leading the way was sophomore Tom Kotrys (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara Wheatfield)(pictured) who registered a match high (8) kills while committing no errors and posting a (.889) kill percentage. (more…)

The Medaille College men’s volleyball team moved up two spots in the latest AVCA Top 15 Rankings as they are now 5th in the National Poll. The Mavs swept a pair of matches on President’s Day over Lancaster Bible and SUNY-IT to continue their climb. This is the highest the Mavericks have been ranked since January 25, 2005 when they established a program best ranking of 4th nationally. The Mavs are (13-4) overall and stand atop the NECVA Western Division standings at (6-0). The Mavs will return home on Thursday (2/25) as they will host Hilbert College for a 7:00pm divisional showdown.

Female: Amanda Sahhar (Jr. – Orchard Park, NY)
Amanda played well as the Lady Mavs wrapped up their perfect AMCC season with a pair of victories. She led the team by averaging (12.5) points and (7.0) rebounds per game. The lady Mavs are (23-2) overall and (20-0) in conference play. They will host the AMCC Championships on Friday and Saturday of this week.

Male: Dave Girts (Jr. – Falconer, NY)
The outside hitter pounded out (13) kills while hitting at a (.385) clip for the 7th ranked Mavericks in a (2-0) week. He also had (7) digs and a remarkable (13) blocks to help on the defensive side. The Mavs are currently (13-4) overall and remain perfect in NECVA Western Division play at (6-0).

The Medaille College men’s volleyball team climbed in the national and conference rankings as a result of a great week against ranked competition. A huge factor in their success was the play of senior outside hitter Ryan Murdie (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East)(pictured) who posted ridiculous numbers, for the week he posted (102) kills while hitting at a (.374) clip. In five matches against ranked teams he had (92) kills, a (.400) kill percentage, (13) blocks, (7) service aces and (18) digs for the Mavericks. As a result, Murdie has been named the NECVA Player of the Week. The Mavs jumped from 14th to 7th in the national AVCA rankings while moving up five spots to 2nd place in the NECVA poll. The NECVA is the largest single-sport conference in the United States consisting of 43 member schools. The Mavs will host Hilbert College on Thursday (2/25) at 7:00pm in a divisional match-up.

The Medaille College men’s volleyball continues to climb in the rankings as they made huge strides in both the AVCA and NECVA weekly polls. The Mavs began last week ranked 14th in the national poll and tied for 7th in the conference rankings. A great week of play that included wins over three ranked teams (including two top ten squads) catapulted the Mavs into a tie for 7th in the national AVCA poll and the Mavs jumped from their seventh place perch in the NECVA rankings into second place behind Baruch College in those rankings. The Mavs are currently (13-4) overall and sit atop the NECVA Western Division standings at (6-0). The Mavs will hit the hardwood again on Thursday (2/25) when they host Hilbert College for a 7:00pm divisional tilt.

Female: Laura Mauger (Sr. – Clarence, NY)(Bowling)
Laura was spectacular in a pair of events this weekend. In the Boulevard Bowl Collegiate Classic she received the third place medal in the 23 doubles teams event. She averaged (217) and rolled a high game of (241) in singles. On Sunday at the 16th Annual SCCC Invitational she finished in fourth place with a (196) average and a high game of (219). The Lady Mavs finished the 2010 season with a (11-10) record against NCAA teams.

Ryan had an unbelievable week as the Mavs went (4-2) and beat three Top 15 teams. For the week he posted (102) kills while hitting at a (.374) clip. In five matches against ranked teams he had (92) kills, a (.400) kill percentage, (13) blocks, (7) service aces and (18) digs for the 14th ranked Mavericks. The team is currently (11-4) overall and (5-0) in NECVA Western Division play.

The Medaille College men’s volleyball team rebounded from a tough five set loss to Nazareth in their last outing by cruising in a pair of NECVA matches at SUNY-IT this afternoon. In their opening match the Mavs made quick work of Lancaster Bible (3-0); (30-19, 30-19, 30-17) and then they pasted SUNY-IT (3-0); (30-19, 30-26, 30-20). The Mavs received spectacular efforts from a trio of players as junior Dave Girts (Falconer, NY/Falconer)(pictured) was a beast at the net finishing the tri-match with (13) blocks. Sophomore Nick Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) led the attack as he crushed (14) kills without committing a single error en route to a (.636) kill percentage. Sophomore setter Sam Arnold (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) posted (56) assists on the day as he guided the Mavs offense to a pair of victories. With the wins Medaille improves to (13-4) overall and they remain atop the NECVA Western Division standings at (6-0). The Mavs will get a well earned break as they don’t hit the court until Thursday (2/25) when they will host Hilbert College for a 7:00pm divisional showdown.
