There would be no storybook ending tonight when the Medaille College men’s basketball team took the ball down the floor with seven seconds remaining, trailing by one point. In contrast from the previous night where they nailed a shot at the buzzer to bring them to overtime, this time the clock hit zeroes with the ball being turned over and Medaille falling two points shy of victory. This night would belong to SUNY-IT who would hold off several feverish comeback attempts by the Mavericks to take a (64-63) victory into the “Sweet Sixteen”. The Mavericks showed their “never die” attitude throughout as they came back on three different occasions from deficits as large as (18) points to turn this game into a nailbiter. (more…)

All seemed to be lost for the Medaille College men’s basketball team as they headed into the final minutes of their opening round game of the NCAA Tournament against Nazareth College, trailing the entire way. However, the Mavs would have a different plan, an epic comeback and finish that gives credence to the term “March Madness” as the Mavs prevailed (78-72) in overtime. It was a game that saw Medaille win despite shooting poorly from all areas of the floor. The Mavs received a monumental effort off the bench from junior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) who put the team on his back for much of the game en route to a career high (28) points on (10 of 16) shooting, he also matched a team high with (9) boards. Medaille (23-4, 16-4) hadn’t beaten Pitt-Bradford in men’s basketball since last years AMCC Championship game. The Panthers had been the Maverick killers all year, handing Medaille their first loss of the year, and their only loss at home. None of that mattered today, as the Medaille men’s basketball team brought home their second straight AMCC tournament championship with an (89-77) win over the second ranked Pitt-Bradford Panthers. Both teams came out of the locker room with high intensity for the re-match of last years AMCC final. Senior guard Mike Berkun (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) would hit two key three pointers in the beginning of the first half to give Medaille momentum. Playing an enormous role in the offense was, junior guard Ricky Reed (Henrietta, NY / Rush-Henrietta)(pictured) who wreaked havoc all day for the interior defense of the Panthers. (more…)
