Athletes of the Week: March 7

Ron Malicki

Male: Ron Malicki (Jr. – Machias, NY)(Basketball)

Ron was the Mavs best player in their two NCAA Tournament games. In the opener he registered a career high (28) points leading Medaille to an overtime victory over Nazareth College. In a heartbreaking one-point loss to SUNY-IT in the Second Round Malicki tallied (15) more points. He also grabbed (13) rebounds in the two games. The Mavs finished the season with a program best record of (24-5).



Alyssa Zemla

Female: Alyssa Zemla (Jr. – Hamburg, NY)(Softball)

In a (2-2) week for the Lady Mavs Alyssa went (7 for 13) with (2) home runs, (7) rbi’s while also posting a double and a triple. She now has (21) career home runs which is second on the all time list. The Lady Mavs are on spring break at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.

Lady Mavs Split With Division II Bloomfield

IMG_6897The trend of splitting doubleheaders continued for the Medaille College softball team as they posted another one against NCAA Division II Bloomfield College.  The Lady Mavs fell (5-1) in the opener and played great in a (6-2) win in the second game.  In the first game senior catcher Laura Mauger (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was strong behind the plate while also scoring the Lady Mavs lone run.  Sophomore Brieanna Brink (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart)(pictured) went (1 for 3) while driving in Mauger.  In the circle senior Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) pitched seven strong innings while striking out five batters.  In the second game Brink once again was a big contributor going (2 for 3) with a double and a run scored.  (more…)

Lady Mavs Post Another Split in Florida

Zemla_soft_08On the second day of their spring trip the Medaille College softball team split a doubleheader against Penn State-Hazleton.  In the first game the Lady Mavs fell (7-6) in extra innings, Alyssa Zemla (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg)(pictured) did her part to try and lead Medaille to victory as she went (2 for 4) from the plate pounding out a home run and a double while driving in three runs.  Sophomore Kristen Rohe (Buffalo, NY/Cleveland Hill) was perfect from the dish, going (3 for 3) with a double and a home run while  Merissa Ciesielski (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) played brilliant defensively.  In the second game the Lady Mavs turned on the offensive firepower as they bested Penn State-Hazleton (11-3) in five innings.  Freshman Megan Anderson (Lockport, NY/Lockport) earned the first victory of her career as she pitched a complete game and fanned five batters.  Sophomore Katie Griffin (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) went (3 for 4) while driving in three runs and Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) crossed the plate twice as well, while going (2 for 3).  The Lady Mavs are now (2-2) and they will face Bloomfield College in a doubleheader tomorrow (3/8) that kicks off at 1:00pm.

Stahura Shines as Lady Mavs Split on Opening Day

stahuraThe Medaille College softball team opened its 2010 campaign in the happiest place on Earth, Disney World, and they did so with an (8-6) victory over Salve Regina University.  Junior Carrie Stahura (Depew, NY/Depew)(pictured) went (3 for 3) from the dish while scoring two runs, crushing a home run and stealing a base.  Senior Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) also went (3 for 3) while driving in two runs, stealing a base and connecting for a triple.  Another home run was crushed by junior Alyssa Zemla (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) who now has (20) in her career, which is second best all time.  Senior Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) pushed her all time win total to (34) as she fanned three, en route to the win.  In the nightcap the Lady Mavs faced Bridgewater State and did not fare as well, falling (4-2).  Stahura continued to swing a hot bat as she went (3 for 4) with a run and three more steals while senior Laura Mauger (Clarence, NY/Clarence) belted out a double and scored a run.  Sophomore pitcher Kristen Rohe (Buffalo, NY/Cleveland Hill) performed well in her season debut as she pitched a complete game and struck out four batters.  The Lady Mavs will take their (1-1) record to the diamond tomorrow (3/7) at 11:00am as they face Penn State-Hazleton in a doubleheader.

Lady Mavs See Season End at Alfred

IMG_6970The Medaille College softball team headed to Alfred University and the Hornell High School softball facilities to compete in their second straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate Tournament. With a hundred in attendance, the single elimination contest placed the fifth seeded Mavericks against the fourth seeded Alfred University Saxons. The Mavericks fought hard only giving one run up in the first and none in the second, but after a twenty-five minute delay due to a lighting failure, the Saxons would erupt for five runs in the third before being shut down for the remaining four innings. Medaille tried to counter, but was held scoreless by a strong Alfred defense who held on to beat the Mavs (6-3).  Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) would take the start for the Lady Mavs, facing thirty batters in her six innings of work. Westling would give up six runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking two against the Saxons (26-9).  (more…)

Athletes of the Week: May 3

Alyssa Zemla

Alyssa Zemla (So. – Softball – Hamburg, NY)

In a (2-2) week at the AMCC Tournament the sophomore catcher stole the show. She hit four home runs and drove in six RBI’s. Two of her homers were mammoth shots that towered over the left field wall. Zemla has connected for (12) round trippers on the season and has an unbelievable (.832) slugging percentage.


Ben Dlugosh

Ben Dlugosh (Sr. – Men’s Lacrosse – Palmyra, NY)

In a (1-1) week for the Mavs Ben was stellar. In a narrow one goal victory over Morrisville State he made six critical stops in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory. In the NEAC Championship game the senior, goalkeeper, made (16) saves in the loss. He finished his Medaille career with a record setting (676) saves.

Softball Receives ECAC Bid

The Medaille College softball team received good news this afternoon as they were one of six teams selected to participate in the ECAC Upstate Softball Tournament.  The Lady Mavs (20-18) are the fifth seed and will head to Alfred University (25-9) to face the fourth seeded Saxons with a 7:00pm first pitch.  This is the second straight ECAC bid for the Lady Mavs as they traveled to Oneonta State in 2008.  The Lady Mavs are in the midst of their second straight twenty win season.

Softball Eliminated From AMCC Tournament

Westling_soft_08The Medaille Lady Maverick softball team entered day two of the 2009 AMCC championship tournament at Penn State-Behrend with a (1-1) tournament record and would be battling to stay alive in the double elimination format. They would be scheduled to take on the fifth seeded La Roche Red Hawks that in day one of the tournament fell by one run to Pitt-Greensburg in an extra inning game. Medaille would come on strong and would come out victorious (9-1) in only five innings sending La Roche home and advancing to the next round where they would not only have a rematch with Frostburg State but fall to them (5-2), ending their bid for an AMCC Championship.  Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk)(pictured) would pitch a dominant five innings in the opener against La Roche giving up only one run on five hits, striking out five and walking none while seeing twenty one batters at the plate. Softball Splits on Day One of AMCC Tournament

IMG_6908The Medaille College Softball team hit the road today for the 2009 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball championship tournament in Erie, PA at the Penn-State Behrend softball facilities. The third seeded Mavericks took on the sixth seeded Frostburg State Bobcats in game one defeating them (1-0) before advancing to the next game against the second seeded Mounties of Mount Aloysius. The Mounties took control of the game early and held on for a (6-1) win over the Lady Mavs. In the opening game Amanda Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) faced twenty-six batters in the seven inning shutout victory. She gave up no runs on three hits, striking out nine and walked none en route to the win.  Westling forced eight Bobcat batters to fly out and another four to ground out in the late morning pitchers duel. Each team was held in check until the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore, Alyssa Zemla (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg)(pictured) went deep hitting a towering home run to leftfield scoring the only run of the game, she finished (1 for 3) from the dish. Carrie Stahura

Carrie Stahura (So. – Softball – Depew, NY)

In a huge week for the Lady Mavs Carrie was magnificent. She went (16 for 32) from the plate, scoring (12) runs while driving in four more. She had a pair of doubles and triples, was walked five times and stole three bases. The Lady Mavs went (7-1) in AMCC play on the week and moved into sole possession of second place in the standings.


Jason Behnke

Jason Behnke (Sr. – Baseball – North Otto, NY)

In a (3-3) week for the Mavs Jason played very well. He went (6 for 14) from the dish for a (.429) batting average. He scored a pair of runs and drove in six more. In a big win over Frostburg State he went (2 for 3) with a home run and three runs batted in. In that game he also threw out three Bobcat runners helping to seal the victory.
