Three days after a hard fought season opening victory the Medaille College men’s lacrosse team was a mere shell of itself in a lackluster (14-5) defeat at the hands of Vassar College in Myrtle Beach, SC. The two teams seemed poised for a sixty minute back and forth battle as they were knotted at (3-3). However, Vassar would net a pair of quick goals to take a two point advantage and would never look back as the sluggish Mavs couldn’t mount a comeback. Sophomore Matt Dunkle (Hamburg, NY/Frontier)(pictured) tallied two goals on the days as did Tyler Strassburg (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East). The Maverick scoring was rounded out by junior midfielder Jimmy Luthart (Amherst, NY/Amherst) who scored his third of the season. The loss drops Medaille to (1-1) on the season and they will face Alfred University on the road on Saturday (3/20) at 4:00pm.

The Medaille College men’s lacrosse team had the best season in school history end with a disappointing (17-4) loss to Keuka College in the NEAC title game. The Mavs would be overmatched throughout as the Storm led wire to wire. It would be the final game for a trio of seniors who left an indelible mark on the program as David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)(1 goal), Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)(pictured) (16 saves) and Jeff Zacharias (Kirkville, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa)(1 goal, 1 assist) all played their guts out in search of a conference title. The Storm would prove to be too much for Medaille as they cruised to victory. The host team jumped out to a (5-0) lead after the first quarter and would never look back. The Mavs finally got on the board at the (11:35) mark of the second quarter on a goal by Zacharias which would trim the Storm lead to four. However, the Storm would strike for two quick goals, putting the game out of reach. Despite the loss, the Mavs finished with a (7-9) record. The seven wins are the most in school history. Bennett leaves Medaille holding every offensive record, while Dlugosh ends his career as the Mavs greatest goaltender. Zacharias turned his career around after his freshman season to finish in the top five in career goals. The 2009 season saw many records fall for the Mavs and they will push for a conference title in 2010.

The Medaille College men’s lacrosse team was playing its second game less than 20 hours after winning a double overtime thriller at Washington & Jefferson. The fatigue would set in early as the Mavs were outrun by St. Vincent College (22-10) this afternoon in Latrobe, PA. The loss snapped a three game win streak by the Mavs. Medaille tallied the games first two goals and led three different times in the first half before St. Vincent went on two impressive runs to seal the victory. The Medaille College men’s lacrosse team was coming off a thrilling one goal win over Cazenovia that was decided by David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)(pictured) with thirteen seconds left on the clock. This afternoon’s game at Washington & Jefferson trumped that as the Mavs overcame a (6-0) deficit after the first quarter to outlast the President’s (14-13) in double overtime. It would be Bennett again who would tally the game tying and winning goals. In the closing seconds of regulation Bennett scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at (13-13). The teams would play out the final fourteen seconds and head to overtime. Neither team would find the back of the net in the first overtime session and Bennett would end the game with a gutty unassisted tally with (2:40) remaining in the second OT. He finished the game with four goals and three assists. (more…)

The Medaille College men’s lacrosse team was playing for a spot in the NEAC title game as they hosted Cazenovia College this afternoon on “Senior Day”. It would be an epic battle that would see Medaille win (10-9) on a goal with thirteen seconds remaining by senior David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon), he finished with (3) goals and (2) assists on the day. The two teams would trade goals, and the lead, throughout with neither team holding an edge of more than a goal. The deciding factor in the game was the play of senior goaltender Ben Dlugosh (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon)(pictured) who stopped (14) Wildcat shots. None of his saves were bigger than his point blank stop of Jevon Pakkala with (1:31) to play and the game knotted at (9-9). The Mavs would clear the ball successfully but a Mavs turnover would give Cazenovia possession with (0:58) left on the clock. (more…)
