The Mavs played a pair of non-conference games in Port Charlotte, FL today and came away with a split as they held on for a (6-5) victory over Juniata College before falling (9-7) to Defiance College in the second game. In the early game Medaille jumped out to a (3-0) lead after five innings and then the two teams had a seesaw battle before the Mavs ultimately prevailed. In that game the Mavs were led by Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who went (3 for 4), drawing a walk, scoring a run and driving in two more. Junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East)(pictured) drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a single to right field as he was (1 for 4) in the game. (more…)

The Mavericks continued their Florida trip with another non-conference game against Wilmington College. Behind a solid hitting performance in which the Mavs had seventeen base hits and the very strong relief pitching of Derek Hoffman (Clarence, NY/Clarence)(pictured) they were victorious by a score of (9-6). The Mavericks came out of the gates fast in the top of the first inning when the first three hitters all recorded base hits. Leadoff hitter Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) continued to swing a hot bat as he connected with a leadoff single. Urbanski then stole second base and crossed the plate on a Jon Lombardo (Jamestown, NY/Frewsburg) RBI single. After a successful hit-and-run play by junior Dan Barrancotta (Lockport, NY/Lockport) there were runners on first and third and still no outs. Lombardo then crossed the plate on a RBI fielder’s choice by clean-up hitter Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East). (more…)

The Medaille College baseball team split a doubleheader today against Bluffton University. The Mavs fell to the Beavers in game one in extra innings (4-3) and won game two by a score of (7-3). In the opener it was scoreless until Bluffton was able to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth on an error with two outs. Bluffton then added two more runs in the in the bottom of the fifth off of starting pitcher Nick Miano (Williamsville, NY/Clarence). The Mavs were able to put together a rally in the seventh inning as junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) led off with a double. The bases were then loaded after Nick Kanutsu (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and John Boyack (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) reached on a walk and hit by pitch. (more…)

The Medaille College baseball team fell to #9 Carthage College by a score of (16-2). The Mavs started out the game strongly when junior Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) and junior Eric Skibinski (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East)(pictured) led off the game with a walk and a single, respectively. However, after a successful sacrifice bunt, Medaille was unable to capitalize stranding two runners at second and third. The Mavs continued to pour on the offensive pressure in the top half of the second inning when junior Nick Kanutsu (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) was hit in by sophomore Nick Weigel (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East), but they also stranded three more runners in the second inning. The Medaille College baseball team kicked off the 2010 season at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida with a doubleheader sweep of the John Jay College Bloodhounds. In the opener, the Mavs (2-0) went on to a (15-4) victory behind the pitching of sophomore Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) and freshman Brad Smith (Buffalo, NY/McKinley). The Mavs fell behind (3-0) in the opening frame, but would battle back for one run in the bottom half of the first inning and then they went on to score ten runs in the second inning with the aid of seven Bloodhound walks and some timely hitting. John Jay would add one more run in the third inning but would not score again the rest of the game. (more…)

The Medaille College Baseball team will host two great weekends of baseball instruction at McCarthy Park. The dates of the clinics are September 12-13 and September 19-20 (September 26-27 will be rain dates). The clinics will run from 9:00am to 1:00pm and will be broken down into four, one hour, sessions. The sessions will cover the fundamentals of pitching, hitting, fielding, and catching. All sessions will be instructed by the Medaille College Baseball Staff featuring head coach Paul Smaldone. The Medaille College baseball team hosted the Pitt-Bradford Panthers in a Monday afternoon AMCC clash at McCarthy Park. The Mavs were hoping to pull themselves from behind to end the season at .500 in conference play and seize the final playoff berth. In game one of the afternoon, a tough (6-5) loss, freshman Matt Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon) went four innings giving up four runs on four hits, striking out four, and walking five before handing the ball to Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) who pitched two innings giving up two runs on four hits striking out two and walking only one. Nick Miano (Williamsville, NY/Clarence) came in to close the game and gave up one hit in his one inning of work. Medaille struck first in the opening inning with a two run home run by senior Jason Behnke (North Otto, NY/Cattaraugus-Little Valley) who went (2 for 4) with two homeruns, earning five RBIs while teammates, junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) went (1 for 4) scoring two runs and sophomore Dan Barrancotta (Lockport, NY/St. Joseph’s) went (1 for 3) with a walk, while scoring a run. The Medaille baseball team celebrated the dedication ceremony of its new home at McCarthy Park Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories over the AMCC rival Franciscan Barons. In the first game, the Mavericks received a dominating pitching performance from sophomore Lance Roe (Clarence Center, NY/Clarence). Roe threw seven strong innings allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out seven Baron batters in the (3-0) victory. Senior Jason Behnke (North Otto, NY/ Cattaraugus-Little Valley) had two hits for the Mavericks and scored the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the 2nd on junior Steven Kanutsu’s (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) sacrifice fly. In the second game, the Maverick bats came to life and they came out on the positive side of a (14-3) decision. Eight Mavericks posted at least one RBI while four posted a two RBI day. Sophomore Andrew Godfrey (Lockport, NY/Lockport)(pictured) hit the first home run of his career in the 5th inning with a two-run blast. Freshman Joe Petronella (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) also collected his first career hit with a single in the 6th inning and came around to score on sophomore Mike Kogut’s (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) RBI double. Medaille now sits at (9-19) overall including a (7-9) mark in AMCC play and will host Pitt-Bradford Monday afternoon at McCarthy Park with first pitch set for 1:00pm.

The Medaille College baseball team played host to Fredonia State for a non-conference double dip this afternoon at McCarthy Park. The visiting Blue Devils came away with the sweep winning game one (16-5) and outlasting the Mavs in the nightcap (4-1). In the opener the Mavs rceceived a (2 for 2) effort at the plate from sophomore Mike Kogut (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) who also drove in two runs. Junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East)(pictured) had a great day at the plate as he went (2 for 4) with a double, a run scored, while driving in a run. The second game would see Lumadue continue his hot hitting as he went (2 for 3) while crossing the plate one more time. While junior Steve Kanutsu (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) went (1 for 2) with the lone rbi of the game. Freshman Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) came out of the bullpen to fan three Fredonia batters while allowing only one hit. The losses drop Medaille to (7-19) on the year as they will host Franciscan University on Saturday at 1:00pm in a game that will have the McCarthy Park Dedication Ceremony beginning at noon.

Carrie Stahura (So. – Softball – Depew, NY)
In a huge week for the Lady Mavs Carrie was magnificent. She went (16 for 32) from the plate, scoring (12) runs while driving in four more. She had a pair of doubles and triples, was walked five times and stole three bases. The Lady Mavs went (7-1) in AMCC play on the week and moved into sole possession of second place in the standings.

Jason Behnke (Sr. – Baseball – North Otto, NY)
In a (3-3) week for the Mavs Jason played very well. He went (6 for 14) from the dish for a (.429) batting average. He scored a pair of runs and drove in six more. In a big win over Frostburg State he went (2 for 3) with a home run and three runs batted in. In that game he also threw out three Bobcat runners helping to seal the victory.
