Beiter Named to AVCA’s Thirty Under 30

Beiter_JakeHead women’s volleyball coach Jake Beiter was awarded the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Thirty Under 30 Award for his tremendous work in his first two years in the head coaching ranks.  The award is given to up and coming coaches in all levels of volleyball coaching in America.  In his two seasons at the helm of the Lady Maverick program Jake has brought them near the top of the conference.  In 2009 he was selected as the AMCC Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Mavs to the conference playoffs and their first ever ECAC Tournament appearance.  The Lady Mavs also set a program record in victories in 2009 with (19).  Coach Beiter is one of eleven head coaches to earn this distinction this year.

Lady Mavs Drop Hard Fought Battle in ECAC’s

McAllister_1The Medaille College women’s volleyball team played one of the most energized matches of their season as they took part in the first ECAC Tournament match in program history.  They traveled to St. John Fisher College to face the Cardinals for the second time this season in the opening round of the upstate tournament, Fisher swept the Mavs in Buffalo in their prior meeting.  The Lady Mavs would prove to be a tougher draw this time around as they battled the Cardinals to a (3-1); (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22) decision.  In the loss Medaille was led by senior Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta)(pictured) who moved into second place on the all time digs list at (1,243) with (31) in the match. Freshman Janine Benkelman (Eden, NY/Eden) put down (14) kills while coming up with (29) digs on the defensive side of the net.  Second Team All AMCC performer Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall) chipped in with (12) kills and (3) blocks while sophomore Sonia Sloan (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added (18) digs.  The Lady Mavs wrapped up the best season in program history with a (19-12) mark.

Medaille Well Represented on All-AMCC Teams

The AMCC announced its fall awards and the Mavericks were very well represented.  The men’s soccer team racked up ten honors, women’s volleyball five and women’s soccer two.  The NCAA Tournament bound Mavericks flourished under Coach of the Year Dan Krzyzanowicz who garnered that honor for the third time.  Senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster)(pictured) earned Player of the Year honors for the second time in his illustrious career.  (more…)

Athletes of the Week: November 8

Male: Ryan Goettel (So. – Syracuse, NY)(Soccer)

Ryan posted a pair of shutouts in the AMCC Tournament leading the Mavs to their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in five years. In a 3-0 blanking of Frostburg State in the semifinals he made seven saves and he posted three more in a 1-0 championship game victory over Penn State-Behrend. The Mavs have 16 shutouts on the season, including ten in a row.

Female: Jeanette Vanstrom (Fr. – Kennedy, NY)(Volleyball)

In a tough loss in the First Round of the AMCC Tournament Jeanette led the Lady Mavs with six kills while hitting at a (.250) clip. The Lady Mavs have won a program best 19 matches thus far in 2009 as they await a potential ECAC Tournament bid.

Women’s Soccer & Volleyball Receive ECAC Nods

Two more postseason bids were handed out to Medaille College teams as the Lady Mavs soccer team received the #2 seed in the ECAC Upstate Tournament and the women’s volleyball squad is seeded #7 in their bracket.  The volleyball team will compete first as they head to #2 seeded St. John Fisher College on Wednesday (11/11) at 8:00pm.  This is the first ECAC appearance in program history as their record setting (19-11) record garnered them that honor.  The women’s soccer team is making their fourth appearance in the ECAC’s as they will take on #3 seed Sage College at 1:30pm Saturday (11/14) at Brockport State.  The Lady Mavs are (9-8-2) on the 2009 season.

Volleyball Falls in AMCC Playoffs

Vanstrom_1The Medaille College women’s volleyball team was ousted in the opening round of the AMCC playoffs as Penn State-Altoona bested them (3-0); (25-13, 25-15, 25-18).  The Lady Mavs had watched the playoffs from the outside over the past several years but they earned their way back in on the strength of a program best season.  In this evenings match the Lady Mavs were led by Jeanette Vanstrom (Kennedy, NY/Falconer)(pictured)  who pounded out six kills while hitting at a (.250) clip.  The loss leaves Medaille at (19-11) and they will await the ECAC Tournament selection on Monday (11/9) to see if their season will continue.

Lady Mavs Split in Regular Season Finales

The Medaille College women’s volleyball team wrapped up its most successful regular season in program history as they split a pair of AMCC matches on a neutral floor.  The Lady Mavs headed to Hilbert College to face Pitt-Greensburg and Frostburg State in matches that would determine their standing in the AMCC playoff picture.  In their opening match Medaille bested Pitt-Greensburg (3-0); (26-24, 25-20, 25-19) as freshman Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall)(pictured) continued her remarkable rookie campaign as she led the way with team highs in kills (10), service aces (5) and blocks (3).  Senior Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) finished with (25) digs on the defensive side.  In their second match the Lady Mavs faced the AMCC’s top team as Frostburg State held off Medaille (3-0); (25-13, 25-17, 25-20) to wrap up the regular season crown.  Fahy again posted a team high (10) kills while McAllister led the way with (13) more digs.  The split sees Medaille end the regular season with a (19-10) overall record and a (6-4) conference mark.  The Lady Mavs will find themselves in the playoffs after several years off, as they finish fifth in the standings and will head to Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday (11/3) for a 7:00pm first round match.

Lady Mavs Struggle on “Senior Night”

The Medaille College women’s volleyball team ran into one of the AMCC’s top teams as they hosted Penn State-Behrend on “Senior Night” in the Sullivan Center.  The Lady Mavs made the opening set difficult on the visitors but the Lions would cruise through the final two sets en route to a (3-0); (25-23, 25-13, 25-20) victory.  A pair of seniors played the final regular season home games of their careers as Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) posted (17) digs and Michele Burgstahler (Wilson, NY/Wilson)(pictured) chipped in with (4) kills and (5) digs.  The loss drops Medaille to (18-9) overall and they are now (5-3) in AMCC play.  The Lady Mavs will wrap up regular season and conference play on Saturday (10/31) as they will take on Pitt-Greensburg (1:00pm) and Frostburg State (3:30pm) on the campus of  Hilbert College.  Those matches will determine the Lady Mavs seeding in the AMCC Tournament and whether they will host a first round game or take to the road.

Lady Mavs Set All Time Win Mark

The Medaille College women’s volleyball team was in a bit of a slump as they entered day two of the Continental Classic hosted by Hamilton College.  They faced the host team in their morning match and it was an epic battle as the Lady Mavs came out on the winning end of a five set thriller (3-2); (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12).  A trio of players stepped up big in the victory as Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall)(pictured) pounded out (11) kills, blocked (8) balls and dished out (4) service aces.  Freshman Robyn Stanley (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) had (10) kills while Janine Benkelman (Eden, NY/Eden) finished the match with (9) kills of her own.  In their final match of the tournament the Lady Mavs crushed Anna Maria College (3-0); (25-11, 25-9, 25-22) as they were led by sophomore Sonia Sloan (Hilton, NY/Hilton) who had a balanced match with (4) kills, (9) digs and (2) service aces.  The pair of victories moves Medaille to (18-8) on the season.  That win total is a program record, eclipsing the (16) win season posted by the 2001 squad.  Freshman Meghan Fahy was named to the All Tournament Team for her strong effort.  The Lady Mavs will return to conference play on Tuesday (10/27) as they will host Penn State-Behrend on “Senior Night” at 7:00pm.

Lady Mavs Drop a Pair at Continental Classic

Fahy_6The Medaille College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Continental Classic hosted by Hamilton College.  In their first match the Lady Mavs faced St. Lawrence University for the second time this year.  In their first meeting the Lady Mavs were swept (3-0), this time Medaille stole a game en route to a (3-1); (25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21) loss.  Freshman Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall) stood out with (11) kills and (3) aces while Janine Benkelman (Eden, NY/Eden) put down (10) kills.  In their nightcap the Lady Mavs fell (3-0); (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) at the hands of Messiah College.   Fahy again led the way with (4) kills and (3). more service aces.  The Lady Mavs will continue play in the Continental Classic tomorrow as they take on the host team, Hamilton College, at 11:00am and then they square off against Anna Maria College at 1:00pm.  The Lady Mavs are currently (16-8) on the season.
