The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced its 2009 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Men’s NCAA Division III All-America Teams and senior Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North)(pictured) became the third member of the Medaille College men’s soccer program to receive that distinction in the past five years, as he was named to the third team. In 2005 Cory Cwiklinski (’06) was Medaille College’s first ever All-American in any sport, then in 2006 Ryan Mangano was named a first team All-American and Cwiklinski garnered second team honors. Last season Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster)(’09) was Medaille’s first ever scholar All-American and he awaits to see if he will receive that prestigious award again this season. Both McFayden and Boughton received 2009 first team Regional All-American honors by the NSCAA as well. In the last five seasons, Medaille has been honored with 15 Regional All-Americans as Boughton became the College’s first ever four time honoree.

Just a few weeks removed from the end of the 2009 men’s soccer season the Mavericks continued to garner much deserved honors. In the final NSCAA rankings of the year the Mavs cracked the Top 25 for the first time, finishing in the 25th slot. They also finished 2009 ranked 23rd in the D3Soccer.com poll. It’s the first time in program history that the Mavs finished the year in the Top 25 of both National polls. The Mavs finished the year at (18-3-2) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after dominating Denison University (3-0) in the opening round. The great season landed four Medaille players on the ECAC South Region 1st Team as Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus)(pictured) and Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland) earned that distinction. No other college placed four players on the 1st team in any other region.

The Mavericks lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament today, falling to (#10) Carnegie Mellon (1-0) in Pittsburgh, PA. The Mavericks came into the match with an 11 game shut-out streak (1,010 minutes) and added another (67) minutes until the Tartans were awarded a penalty kick and senior Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) kicked it past sophomore Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY / Cicero-North Syracuse) for the lone goal of the game and the winning score. Uncharacteristically, the Mavericks were outshot in the contest (15-7) and only registered one of their seven shots on goal. The loss ends Medaille’s bid for a National Championship, and is the first time in school history that Carnegie Mellon has advanced to the Sweet 16. The Mavericks had a historic season in which it saw its captain senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY / Lancaster) become the NCAA Division III all-time assists leader (82), Head Coach Dan Krzyzanowicz win his (100) game of his head coaching career, and in which the Mavs won their first ever NCAA tournament game. The Mavs finished the 2009 season with a teriffic (18-3-2) record.

Senior Laura Freeman (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) (pictured) tallied her (19th) goal of the season; however, it was not enough as the Lady Mavericks (10-9-2) fell (3-1) to Brockport (12-4-3, 5-2-2) in the ECAC Upstate Championship game Sunday at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport. Senior Junior Jess Bush (Dryden, NY/Dryden) scored in the second minute of play for the Golden Eagles, as Brockport would take a (1-0) lead early. Brockport would add another goal from senior Michelle Gibaud (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia), who was named tournament most valuable player, just after halftime. Medaille would cut the lead in half as Freeman buried home a free kick of the foot of junior Mary Smialek (Girard, PA/Girard) in the 67th minute. However, that would be as close as Medaille would get as one minute later Courtney Belding (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) would ice it for Brockport. The Lady Mavs seemed to cut the lead down to one again in the 78th minute; however, the goal was nullified by an offsides call, and that would end the Medaille comeback just short. Junior Alexa Wisel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) made (11) saves in the loss as Medaille was outshot (25-6) by the Lady Golden Eagles.

It was just a matter of time before the Medaille College men’s soccer team (18-2-2) would breakthrough in the NCAA Tournament. In their fourth trip to the Dance the Mavs continued their stellar play with a (3-0) blanking of Denison University (12-5-3). This game started much like their first round game in 2008 as sophomore Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) blasted home his (17th) goal of the season on a beautiful through ball that was played to him from Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) just (3:13) into play, giving the Mavs a (1-0) lead. Rouse scored early in the 2008 game as well. The Boughton assist stretches his NCAA Career record in that category to (82). The outcome would be much more favorable this time as the Mavs were able to hold off the Big Red. (more…)

It was a great day for Medaille College soccer. The men’s team won its first ever NCAA Tournament game and then the Lady Mavs went out and got their first every ECAC Tournament win as they bested Sage College (2-0) at Brockport State. The Lady Mavs got on the board in the 33rd minute when Mary Smialek (Girard, PA/Girard)(pictured) drove home a penalty kick. Then senior Laura Freeman (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) registered her (18th) goal of the year early in the second half as she rocketed a shot from 15 yards out into the top right corner of the goal. From that point on the Lady Mavs locked Sage College down. Junior goalkeepers Brittany DeBole (Rochester, NY/Northstar Academy) and Alexa Wisel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) split the shutout, with Wisel stopping both of the Sage College shots on net. The win gets Medaille into double digits in the win column as they are now (10-8-2) overall. They will face Brockport State tomorrow (11/15) at noon in the ECAC Upstate Championship game.
