Men’s Volleyball Rack Up Conference Accolades

Nawotka_mvb_08_2Medaille Mavericks men’s volleyball has set fire to the NECVA Western Division all season long, and on Friday, they were recognized for doing so. Head Coach Keith Koch was named NECVA Western Division Coach of the Year, becoming the fifth Medaille Head Coach to earn Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2009-10 (Dan Krzyzanowicz, Pete Lonergan, Mike MacDonald, Jake Beiter). The Mavs also had (6) first and second team nominees, more then any other school in the Western Division. Getting named to the first team were senior Ryan Murdie (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East), senior Andy Nawotka (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island)(pictured), junior Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), and junior Dan Jackson (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg). Selected to the second team were sophomore Nick Johnson (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), and freshman Erin Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes). Medaille College (20-9) also learned their fate in the upcoming NECVA Tournament on Sunday, being seeded (8) in the (16) team field. The Mavericks will face off against the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz on Friday, April 9 at 8pm. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals and face the winner of the (1) Rivier, (16) New Jersey City match-up on Saturday, April 10.

AMCC Announces Basketball Award Winners

Hack_Franciscan#1The AMCC announced its All Conference teams and postseason award winners today and the Mavs received several accolades.  Senior Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay)(pictured) was named the AMCC Player of the Year one year after earning first team honors in 2009 as he lived up to his Preseason Player of the Year designation.  Hack would accompany head coach Mike MacDonald onto the men’s award scene as Coach Mac was named Coach of the Year for the third time in his four seasons at the helm of the Mavericks.  On the women’s side head coach Pete Lonergan also earned his third Coach of the Year distinction as he led the Lady Mavs to a perfect conference record and a (25-2) record.  Two Second Team nods were awarded as Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Kacie Mills (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) landed there while sophomore Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, NY/Nichols) received Honorable Mention honors.  Both the men’s and women’s team won AMCC Regular Season and Tournament titles earning NCAA Tournament bids in the process.  The Mavericks will face Nazareth College on Friday (3/5) at 6:00pm at Plattsburgh State while the Lady Mavs will take the floor on Friday at 5:00pm against Lebanon Valley College on the campus of Marymount University.  Click here to see all of the AMCC award winners.

Coach K. Honored by Am-Pol Eagle

Coach K. 2Daniel J. Krzyzanowicz, head coach for Medaille College’s men’s soccer team, has been selected as one of the Am-Pol Eagle’s Citizens of the Year.  Since 2002, “Coach K” has built Medaille’s men’s soccer program into a powerhouse team. In addition to leading the team to the NCAA Tournament in four of the past five years, he has been named the NEAC Coach of the Year for 2002, and the AMCC Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2009. The Mavs have won five consecutive undefeated AMCC Regular Season Titles under Coach K’s tutelage.  He earned his 100th victory early in the 2009 season as well.  The Am-Pol Eagle annually honors members and organizations of the Polish-American community in Western New York, and this year’s honorees will be celebrated at a luncheon at Kloc’s Grove in West Seneca on Sunday, April 18.

Beiter Named to AVCA’s Thirty Under 30

Beiter_JakeHead women’s volleyball coach Jake Beiter was awarded the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Thirty Under 30 Award for his tremendous work in his first two years in the head coaching ranks.  The award is given to up and coming coaches in all levels of volleyball coaching in America.  In his two seasons at the helm of the Lady Maverick program Jake has brought them near the top of the conference.  In 2009 he was selected as the AMCC Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Mavs to the conference playoffs and their first ever ECAC Tournament appearance.  The Lady Mavs also set a program record in victories in 2009 with (19).  Coach Beiter is one of eleven head coaches to earn this distinction this year.

Medaille College Volleyball Camp for Boys & Girls

IMG_4979The Medaille College Volleyball programs will host a pair of two day commuter volleyball camps.  The camp for girls ages (14-18) will run from 9:00am to 2:30pm on Saturday, August 8th and Sunday August 9th.  The boys camp will run from 3:00pm to 8:30pm on the same dates for the same age groups. The camp will be a mixture of instruction and competition as the knowledgeable Medaille staff will guide all participants through a series of drills, demonstrations, and team play.  The cost of the camp is $100 per participant and there will be a discounted team rate of $85 per participant if six or more players from the same team sign up together.  For more information click here for a camp brochure or contact head women’s volleyball coach, Jake Beiter, via email at jbeiter1@medaille.edu.

AMCC All Conference Basketball Teams Announced

IMG_2382The AMCC All Conference Selections were released today and two Mavericks were named to the first team.  Senior, guard, Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata)(pictured) received a First Team nod while teammate sophomore, Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) garnered Honorable Mention honors.  On the men’s side junior, Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) was tabbed as a First Team selection and sophomore, guard, Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was a Second Team pick.  Third year head coach Mike MacDonald was named the AMCC Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.  He has compiled a (47-33) record in his time at Medaille.  The Medaille men will take on John Carroll University in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (2/6) at 6:00pm in Cleveland, Ohio.

Former Volleyball Standout Jake Beiter Named Women’s Volleyball Head Coach

Jake BeiterMedaille College has named Jake Beiter as the head coach for the women’s volleyball team for the 2008 season. He previously served as the men’s volleyball team’s assistant coach.
Beiter played for the men’s volleyball team from 2003-07, where he was a two-time All American player, the American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Year, and set Medaille records in most digs, most aces and most kills. He was also a three-time gold medalist in the Empire State Games.
The Eden native was head coach of the Eden Volleyball Club for five years, and has assisted at Mt. St. Mary’s, Canisius High School and Brocton High School. He has participated in developmental camps in Eden and at the University at Buffalo and Canisius High School.
Beiter has a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from Medaille College, and is working toward a master’s degree in student personnel administration.
The women’s volleyball season begins on Friday, August 29 with two games at the D’Youville College Spartan Invitational.

Women’s Soccer Coach Announced for 2008 Season

Matt AndrewsWith four years’ experience as assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Medaille, Matt Andrews will now take on the head coach position for the women’s soccer team‘s 2008 season. Prior to coming to Medaille, Andrews spent seven years coaching high school soccer in western New York. He began coaching at Gates-Chili High School and continued at Clarence High School after moving to Buffalo in 2000.

Andrews is the director of goalkeepers for the Clarence Soccer Club and has previously coached club teams at various age levels. He holds a NSCAA Advanced Regional license and will soon complete his national license.

Originally a standout goalkeeper at Penfield High School near Rochester, Andrews earned bachelor’s degrees in history and education from Miami University in Ohio. He also earned a master’s degree in liberal studies from SUNY Brockport.

The women’s soccer season begins with an away game at Grove City College on Friday, August 29. The home opener will take place on Saturday, September 6 against Washington & Jefferson College at All High Stadium behind Bennett High School on Main Street in Buffalo.

Andrews says, “I am excited to build on the solid foundation the program currently has and look forward to developing a program that will compete each and every year for a championship in the highly competitive AMCC.

“We have an outstanding nucleus of returning players, some exciting first-year recruits and a group of transfers that should create a highly competitive training camp and an exciting year for the Medaille women’s soccer team.

“Our coaching staff is very close on both the women’s and men’s sides. I believe this will make for a smooth and successful transition that will just help our outstanding student-athletes.”

Boughton Plays for Fort Wayne Fever Men’s Soccer

Men’s soccer standout Gary Boughton (Lancaster/Lancaster High School) will have solid experience with a nationally-competitive team once the fall season begins Friday, August 29. As Boughton starts his junior year at Medaille, the 5′9″ midfielder will have completed a summer season with the Fort Wayne Fever, a Premier Development League (PDL) team based in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In 2007, Boughton scored three goals and four assists in his first year playing in the PDL. In the first half of he 2008 season, he has scored six goals and one assist for a total of thirteen points.

Medaille Searching for a New Women’s Volleyball Coach

Medaille College is seeking a part-time 10 month Women’s Volleyball Coach, responsible for all facets of developing and maintaining a successful women’s volleyball program including, but not limited to scheduling and conducting practice/training sessions, recruiting athletically and academically qualified students, hiring and supervising an assistant coach, maintaining NCAA, AMCC & college regulations and policies, and fundraising.
