Mavs Win One; Lose One
The Mavs played a pair of non-conference games in Port Charlotte, FL today and came away with a split as they held on for a (6-5) victory over Juniata College before falling (9-7) to Defiance College in the second game. In the early game Medaille jumped out to a (3-0) lead after five innings and then the two teams had a seesaw battle before the Mavs ultimately prevailed. In that game the Mavs were led by Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who went (3 for 4), drawing a walk, scoring a run and driving in two more. Junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East)(pictured) drove in a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a single to right field as he was (1 for 4) in the game. Senior Brian Vital (North Grafton, MA/Grafton) earned his second victory of the season as he pitched six strong innings while Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) earned the save in three innings of work, fanning three batters in the process. In the second game the Mavs fell behind early due to several defensive miscues, a walk, a hit batter and an error. The Mavs found themselves down (6-1) after three innings as Nick Miano (Williamsville, NY/Clarence) was chased after two plus innings in which only one run was earned. Senior Alex Lindauer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) came in to pitch the next (2.1) innings allowing just one run. Lumadue would shine again as he came in to pinch hit in the fourth inning, he would end the game going (3 for 3) from the dish with a pair of doubles and a triple while scoring one run and driving in two more. Sophomore Ryan Ilardi (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) went (2 for 2) with a walk and a run while Mike Kogut (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) also came off the bench to pinch hit and went (2 for 2), drawing a walk, pounding out a double and crossing the plate once in the loss. Freshman Brad Smith (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) tossed the final four innings from the bump, allowing two runs. The split moves the Mavs to (5-3) on the season as they will face the College of Mt. St. Joseph tomorrow (3/12) at 1:30pm for their final game in Florida.
