Mavs Earn Split With Bluffton
The Medaille College baseball team split a doubleheader today against Bluffton University. The Mavs fell to the Beavers in game one in extra innings (4-3) and won game two by a score of (7-3). In the opener it was scoreless until Bluffton was able to plate a run in the bottom of the fourth on an error with two outs. Bluffton then added two more runs in the in the bottom of the fifth off of starting pitcher Nick Miano (Williamsville, NY/Clarence). The Mavs were able to put together a rally in the seventh inning as junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) led off with a double. The bases were then loaded after Nick Kanutsu (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) and John Boyack (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) reached on a walk and hit by pitch. Jeff Cox (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) then hit a one out RBI single which plated Kasprzyk and advanced Kanutsu and pinch runner Nick Weigel (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East). Then, with two outs, junior shortstop Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster)(pictured) laced a single up the middle to plate both Kanutsu and Weigel which sent the game in to extra innings. The Mavs would eventually fall in the bottom half of the eighth inning as Bluffton’s leadoff man was able to reach on a single and then after being sacrificed over to second was able to score on a base hit to right field. Miano got the no decision after pitching (5.1) innings in which he gave up (2) earned runs on (7) hits, (2) walks and (1) hit by pitch. Sophomore Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) got the loss in relief (1-1) surrendering (2) hits and (1) earned run in (2) innings of work. In the nightcap, junior pitcher Matt Dunford (Buffalo, NY / Bishop Timon) got the nod and threw a complete game, striking out (6) Beavers, while only surrendering (4) hits and (3) unearned runs. The Mavs were able to score one run in each the second, third and fourth innings. In the second inning senior catcher Jeff Kasprzyk (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s) led off the inning with a towering home run to left field to get the Mavs on the board. In the third, junior Erik Skibinski (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) was able to score on a ball hit by Lumadue. In the fourth, the Mavs tacked on another run off when Jeff Cox drove a ball deep over the left field wall, to make the score (3-1). Bluffton would rally in the top half of the sixth inning by adding two more runs after a few Medaille miscues in the field. Medaille answered back in the bottom half of the frame when Urbanski drove a bases loaded triple deep into the right-centerfield gap, plating Kasprzyk, Cox, and Dan Barrancotta (Lockport, NY/Lockport). Skibinski then tacked on one more run by plating Urbanski on a single to right field. On the day, Urbanski reached base four times and had (5) RBIs. Kasprzyk also reached base four times on three hits, which included a double and a home run. Ray Clogston (Olcott, NY/Newfane) also chipped in with three hits including a double. After the double header split the Mavs improve to a (3-2) and next hit the diamond at 10:00am on Wednesday (3/10) against Wilmington College.
