Mavs Survive Squeaker on the Road

The 22nd ranked Medaille College men’s basketball team won its third straight over AMCC rival Penn State-Behrend (76-74) in Erie, PA this evening. The matchups between these two teams are turning into epic battles as the Mavs total margin of victory during their winning streak over the Lions is six points. The Mavs upended Behrend earlier this season (65-64) in the Sullivan Center and in their final meeting of the 2008-2009 season the Mavs held on for a three point victory. Tonight’s victory was the first for Medaille at Behrend since December 1, 2000 (a 61-60 win) and it gives the Mavs the second twenty win season in program history as they accomplished that feat for the first time last season. This evening’s game saw eleven ties and thirteen lead changes with neither team ever leading by double digits. The Mavs trailed (42-38) at the half but used some great work on the glass to help lead them to victory. The Mavs outrebounded the hosts (32-20) on the night. For the second consecutive game the Mavs scorched the nets from all areas of the court as they were (51.1%) from the floor, (57.1%) from behind the arc and (87.0%) from the charity stripe. The Mavs were led by Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta)(pictured) who tied a team high with (15) points. Teammate Mike Berkun (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) also tallied (15) points while handing out (5) assists to continue his tremendous play of late. Senior Kelly Condello (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was (6 of 9) from the floor for (12) points while grabbing (5) boards. The Mavs improve to (20-1) overall and (15-1) in AMCC play. They will head to Mt. Aloysius College on Saturday (2/6) for a 3:00pm conference tilt.
