In March of this year the Medaille College men’s basketball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament as they were beaten by John Carroll University on the Blue Streaks home floor in the tournament’s opening round. Fast forward eight months and the same two teams would meet again, on the same floor. The Blue Streaks spent the first several weeks of the 2009-2010 season as the nations second ranked team but a pair of tough losses dropped them from that perch. They rebounded with a win in the game leading up to their showdown with the Mavs, however, Medaille proved that they are no fluke as they upended the nations ninth ranked team (92-91) to remain unbeaten at (11-0). The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced its 2009 NSCAA/Performance Subaru Men’s NCAA Division III All-America Teams and senior Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North)(pictured) became the third member of the Medaille College men’s soccer program to receive that distinction in the past five years, as he was named to the third team. In 2005 Cory Cwiklinski (’06) was Medaille College’s first ever All-American in any sport, then in 2006 Ryan Mangano was named a first team All-American and Cwiklinski garnered second team honors. Last season Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster)(’09) was Medaille’s first ever scholar All-American and he awaits to see if he will receive that prestigious award again this season. Both McFayden and Boughton received 2009 first team Regional All-American honors by the NSCAA as well. In the last five seasons, Medaille has been honored with 15 Regional All-Americans as Boughton became the College’s first ever four time honoree.

Two days removed from a (57) point thumping of Hilbert College the Lady Mavs outdid themselves with a (92-27) blowout road victory against Franciscan University. The (65) point margin of victory is the largest in program history, surpassing the (62) point win they had at Lake Erie College (78-16) in December of 2004. It was a total team effort that led the Lady Mavs as (10 of 11) players found the scoring ledger. The Lady Mavs received a command performance from Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, NY/Nichols)(pictured) who connected on a record (6 of 6) shots from behind the three point arc, to finish with (18) points. Just a few weeks removed from the end of the 2009 men’s soccer season the Mavericks continued to garner much deserved honors. In the final NSCAA rankings of the year the Mavs cracked the Top 25 for the first time, finishing in the 25th slot. They also finished 2009 ranked 23rd in the D3Soccer.com poll. It’s the first time in program history that the Mavs finished the year in the Top 25 of both National polls. The Mavs finished the year at (18-3-2) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after dominating Denison University (3-0) in the opening round. The great season landed four Medaille players on the ECAC South Region 1st Team as Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus)(pictured) and Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland) earned that distinction. No other college placed four players on the 1st team in any other region.

The 2009-2010 season has opened up well for the Lady Mavericks and tonight was no different as Medaille upended St. John Fisher (73-68) in Rochester. The Cardinals are the winningest team in Division III women’s basketball history and the Lady Mavs were clutch in all phases of the game en route to the victory. The Lady Mavs led for the majority of the game and, when pushed, nailed down their free throws to keep the Cardinals at bay. It was a complete team effort for Medaille but three players stood out as freshman Susanne Black (Houghton, NY/Fillmore) led all scorers with (19) points while pulling down (7) boards. Meanwhile seniors Kacie Mills (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East)(pictured) (18 points – 4 assists) and Tiffany Sullivan (Penfield, NY/Nazareth Academy) (15 points – 7 rebounds – 4 assists) helped seal the win. The victory moves Medaille to (7-1) on the season as they prepare to host AMCC foe Hilbert College on Wednesday (12/9) at 6:00pm in the Sullivan Center.
