Mavs Hang On For Opening Day Win
The Medaille College men’s basketball team is coming off the best season in school history and they added another notch to their belt as they defeated Geneseo State for the first time in program history with a (83-77) victory in the Sullivan Center this evening. The Blue Knights handed the Mavs an eight point loss last season and Medaille avenged that defeat in this game. There were points in this game where it seemed the Mavs would run away with the victory as they stretched their lead to as many as (16) points with (15:14) remaining in the second half. However, Geneseo would keep clawing back as they narrowed the gap to as low as six points with just (1:14) remaining before Medaille put the game away. Leading the charge for Medaille was the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year, Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay)(pictured) who poured in a team high (19) points while connecting on half of his eight attempts from behind the arc. Senior Mike Berkun (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) was (3 for 4) from the floor, including (3 for 3) from three point range and a perfect (4 for 4) from the free throw line en route to a (13) point, (2) rebound, (2) assist and (1) steal evening. Junior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) was tremendous from the charity stripe as he connected on (11 of 12) free throws, finishing with (17) points. The Mavs are (1-0) on the season and they will host Paul Smith’s College on Thursday (11/19) at 7:00pm as part of the Ad Pro Sports Classic.
