Mavs Blank Hilbert; Stay Perfect in AMCC
For the first thirty-three minutes one was to wonder whether the Mavs would ever breakthrough against crosstown rival Hilbert. They were thoroughly dominating the Hawks but couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. All of that would change quickly as sophomore Stuart Ziegler (West Plains, MO/West Plains) would open the flood gates with his goal at the (33:13) mark in what would end up as a (7-0) Medaille College victory. The Mavs would add goals in the 38th minute from Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) and in the 41st minute on a David Pihlblad (Randolph, NY/Randolph) to take a (3-0) lead into the half. Freshman George Tor (Lagos, Nigeria) would open the scoring in the second half on a brilliant unassisted tally that he rattled in off the right goal post. Junior Corey Phillips (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington)(pictured) would put the Mavs up (5-0) with his marker in the 58th minute. The games most exciting goal would come ten minutes later as Tor undressed a Hilbert defender with two brilliant moves inside the six off an assist from Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Tor also tacked on an assist to go with his two goals while Boughton added three more assists to his all time NCAA mark. He now has (76) in his brilliant career. Sophomore Josh Hall (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) rounded out the scoring with his first goal of the season. The most impressive stat of the day for Medaille was that they held the Hawks without a shot on the evening while they unleashed (42) shots, (21) of which were on goal. The shutout was split by Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Nick Kurtz (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each of whom had a quiet night. The Mavs reached double digits in victories as they are now (10-2-1) overall and they remain perfect in AMCC play at (4-0-0). A huge test lies ahead for the Mavs as they will travel to Penn State-Altoona on Saturday (10/10) for a 3:00pm conference game.
