The Lady Maverick women’s soccer team headed into their first round AMCC playoff game on the heels of two straight shutouts in which they outscored their opponents (8-0).  One of those wins came against Pitt-Bradford four days ago in Bradford, PA as the Lady Mavs walked off the pitch as the third seeded team in the AMCC playoff picture.  The Lady Mavs hosted the Panthers in their playoff opener and dominated in every area of the game except where it counts most, as Pitt-Bradford made a goal in the 13th minute hold up in a (1-0) upset of Medaille.  The Lady Mavs outshot Pitt-Bradford (21-4) and had (14) corner kick opportunities to the Panthers two, while dominating the time of possession.  The Lady Mavs best scoring opportunities came on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute as Chelsea Buzyniski (Appleton, NY/Newfane) was fouled hard in the box and was awarded the P.K., she stepped up and blistered a shot that rang off the crossbar deflecting right back to Megan Bagley (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy)  who chipped her rebound shot just over the crossbar.  After that the Panther keeper kept the Lady Mavs from finding the back of the net despite many quality chances.  The loss drops Medaille to (9-8-2) on the season and they will wait to hear the ECAC Tournament bracket release on Monday (11/9) to see if they have been selected for postseason play.

The Medaille College women’s volleyball team wrapped up its most successful regular season in program history as they split a pair of AMCC matches on a neutral floor.  The Lady Mavs headed to Hilbert College to face Pitt-Greensburg and Frostburg State in matches that would determine their standing in the AMCC playoff picture.  In their opening match Medaille bested Pitt-Greensburg (3-0); (26-24, 25-20, 25-19) as freshman Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall)(pictured) continued her remarkable rookie campaign as she led the way with team highs in kills (10), service aces (5) and blocks (3).  Senior Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) finished with (25) digs on the defensive side.  In their second match the Lady Mavs faced the AMCC’s top team as Frostburg State held off Medaille (3-0); (25-13, 25-17, 25-20) to wrap up the regular season crown.  Fahy again posted a team high (10) kills while McAllister led the way with (13) more digs.  The split sees Medaille end the regular season with a (19-10) overall record and a (6-4) conference mark.  The Lady Mavs will find themselves in the playoffs after several years off, as they finish fifth in the standings and will head to Penn State-Altoona on Tuesday (11/3) for a 7:00pm first round match.

Men’s Basketball Prevails in Exhibition Action

October 30, 2009 By: Mike Carbery Category: Men's Basketball, Winter Sports No Comments →

IMG_4427The Medaille College men’s basketball team hosted Brock University for an exhibition game in the Sullivan Center this evening.  The visitors from Canada were playing in their seventh game of the season while the Mavs had just a handful of practices under their belts.  Despite the discrepancy in preparation time the Mavs held on to beat the Badgers (80-71) in an up tempo affair.  The Mavs fell behind in the opening minutes of the game before taking control at the halfway point of the opening stanza.  A feverish run capped by a fast break layup at the buzzer by Brock would see the teams knotted (38-38) at the break.  The Mavs would make the necessary adjustments in the locker room as they controlled the majority of play in the second half.  Leading the way for Medaille was the AMCC’s Preseason Player of the Year, Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay)(pictured) who poured in a team high (17) points.  Also having a strong night was senior Chris Moscato (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) who chipped in with (7) points and collected a team high (8) boards.  The Mavs will head back to the practice floor before playing in another exhibition contest at Division I Colgate University on Thursday, November 12th at 7:00pm.  The Mavs will open up regular season play at home on November 17th as Geneseo State will head to the Sullivan Center for an 8:00pm tip-off.

The Medaille College men’s soccer team headed to Pitt-Bradford needing a win or a tie to capture their unprecedented fifth straight undefeated AMCC Regular Season Crown.  They got that and more as they hammered the host Panthers (9-0) in their regular season finale.  The Mavs had ten players find their way to the scoresheet with seven different players tallying goals.  Leading the way was senior Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland)(pictured) who was playing in his record tying 84th career game.  Fittingly he tallied two brilliant header goals and assisted on another Medaille goal.  Also netting two and assisting on another was freshman George Tor (Lagos, Nigeria) one of his goals was a beautiful strike on a free kick that rendered the Panther goalkeeper helpless.  Another senior played well as John Siefert (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) dished out a pair of helpers including the assist on the game winning first goal which Meier tallied.  (more…)

The Medaille College women’s soccer team wrapped up the #3 seed in the AMCC Tournament with a (4-0) road win at conference foe Pitt-Bradford.  The Lady Mavs dominated throughout as they held the Panthers to three shots, none of them were on goal.  Meanwhile Medaille blistered the Pitt-Bradford goalkeepers with (29) shots, (15) of which found their way on frame.  Senior Katie Schelble (Springville, NY/Springville Griffith) opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute off an assist from Katie Bush (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown). They would strike again seven minutes later as Megan Bagley (Kenmore, NY/Mt. St. Mary Academy) beat the Panther keeper on an offering from Chelsea Buzyniski (Appleton, NY/Newfane)(pictured) as they took a (2-0) lead into the break.  (more…)

Burgstahler_0927b
The Medaille College women’s volleyball team ran into one of the AMCC’s top teams as they hosted Penn State-Behrend on “Senior Night” in the Sullivan Center.  The Lady Mavs made the opening set difficult on the visitors but the Lions would cruise through the final two sets en route to a (3-0); (25-23, 25-13, 25-20) victory.  A pair of seniors played the final regular season home games of their careers as Holley McAllister (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) posted (17) digs and Michele Burgstahler (Wilson, NY/Wilson)(pictured) chipped in with (4) kills and (5) digs.  The loss drops Medaille to (18-9) overall and they are now (5-3) in AMCC play.  The Lady Mavs will wrap up regular season and conference play on Saturday (10/31) as they will take on Pitt-Greensburg (1:00pm) and Frostburg State (3:30pm) on the campus of  Hilbert College.  Those matches will determine the Lady Mavs seeding in the AMCC Tournament and whether they will host a first round game or take to the road.

Boughton_LaRoche#2
The Medaille College men’s soccer team traveled to Pitt-Greensburg for an AMCC showdown and found the field under water.  The match would be moved to Seton Hill University and the Mavs would prevail (3-0) regardless of the elements.  The match would see senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster)(pictured) add to his NCAA career assist record as he doled out two more helpers to bring his total to (80).  Boughton also scored a goal in this game, giving him (35) for his career.  The Mavs also received goals from Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) who assisted on Boughton’s goal and senior Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland) who posted his seventh marker of the year.  The Mavs are one victory (or tie) away from wrapping up their fifth straight undefeated AMCC Regular Season title.  The shutout is the thirteenth of the year for the Mavs and the eighth for sophomore Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) who stopped the only Bobcat shot that was on frame.  The Mavs are now (14-2-2) overall and (8-0-1) in AMCC play as they head to Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday (10/27) to wrap up the regular season with a 3:00pm start time against the Panthers.

October 24, 2009 By: Mike Carbery Category: Fall Sports, Women's Soccer No Comments →

Bush_FSU #1The Medaille College women’s soccer team creeped above the .500 mark with a big (3-0) conference win at Pitt-Greensburg.  On a dreary day in in Pittsburgh, PA the Lady Mavs held a (1-0) edge at the half on a goal from senior Laura Freeman (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West).  The second half would see a Medaille surge as Cassie Elkins (Springville, NY/Springville-Griffith) pushed the lead to two with her tally.  Junior Katie Bush (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) would bury a chance to make it a (3-0) game, she also posted an assist on the day.  Freshman Lindsey Grana (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) would wrap up the scoring with her marker.  Junior Alexa Wisel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) earned the victory between the posts as she stopped several Bobcat chances.  The win moves the Lady Mavs to (8-7-2) overall and they improve to (6-2-1) in AMCC play.  The Lady Mavs will wrap up regular season play on Tuesday (10/27) as they head to Pitt-Bradford for a 1:00pm conference tilt.

Lady Mavs Set All Time Win Mark

October 24, 2009 By: Mike Carbery Category: Fall Sports, Women's Volleyball No Comments →

Fahy_4
The Medaille College women’s volleyball team was in a bit of a slump as they entered day two of the Continental Classic hosted by Hamilton College.  They faced the host team in their morning match and it was an epic battle as the Lady Mavs came out on the winning end of a five set thriller (3-2); (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-12).  A trio of players stepped up big in the victory as Meghan Fahy (Kendall, NY/Kendall)(pictured) pounded out (11) kills, blocked (8) balls and dished out (4) service aces.  Freshman Robyn Stanley (Cheektowaga, NY/Sacred Heart) had (10) kills while Janine Benkelman (Eden, NY/Eden) finished the match with (9) kills of her own.  In their final match of the tournament the Lady Mavs crushed Anna Maria College (3-0); (25-11, 25-9, 25-22) as they were led by sophomore Sonia Sloan (Hilton, NY/Hilton) who had a balanced match with (4) kills, (9) digs and (2) service aces.  The pair of victories moves Medaille to (18-8) on the season.  That win total is a program record, eclipsing the (16) win season posted by the 2001 squad.  Freshman Meghan Fahy was named to the All Tournament Team for her strong effort.  The Lady Mavs will return to conference play on Tuesday (10/27) as they will host Penn State-Behrend on “Senior Night” at 7:00pm.
