Mavs Drop OT Heartbreaker at #19 Hobart
The Medaille College men’s soccer team headed to Geneva, NY on a dreary afternoon to take on the 19th ranked Hobart Statesmen. In what would turn out to be a back and forth battle the Mavs had their hearts broken as they fell (1-0) in overtime to Hobart. The Mavs outshot the Statesmen (19-16) but were unable to find the frame for much of the first half. The Mavs had many quality scoring chances but pushed several balls wide and over the crossbar. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse)(pictured) made a couple of critical saves in the early stages of the match to keep Hobart off the scoreboard. He finished with five stops on the day. The majority of Medaille’s scoring chances came off the feet of Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) who finished with seven shots and freshman George Tor (Lagos, Nigeria) who tallied six. Early in the overtime period Rouse flicked the ball onto Tor who had a one on one with the Statesmen keeper who made a terrific diving stop. Senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) also played several beautiful balls in the match creating chances for the Mavs, but it would be to no avail. The Statesmen struck (7:58) into the overtime period with Michael Moulton converting on a cross from Andrew Steates sealing the Mavs fate and dropping them to (8-2-1) on the year, the Statesmen improve to (7-1-1). The Mavs will return to AMCC play on Saturday (10/3) as they will host Frostburg State in a critical match at 8:00pm at All High Stadium.
