Medaille and York (PA) Play to a Draw
The Medaille College men’s soccer team hosted the nation’s tenth ranked team as York College (PA) came to All High Stadium. It was a physical battle that saw a pair of penalty kicks determine the outcome in the (1-1) double overtime thriller. The Mavs opened up by controlling play over the games first five minutes and then the tide woud swing to the Spartans as they dictated play for much of the first half. The most critical moment of the first half came when York College was awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box at the (18:07) mark. The Spartan booter took a low linedrive shot to sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Goettel’s (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (pictured) left and the keeper dove and stopped the shot, he would finish with (6) saves on the day. The Mavs would push forward after that but were unable to respond with a goal, and the teams would end the half deadlocked at (0-0). The second half would begin with teams trading shots but it would be York that would strike first as they scored on a header at the (63:28) mark of the game. Just under five minutes later the Mavs would be awarded a penalty kick after a hard foul in the box and Coach K. would send senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) to the dot and he didn’t disappoint as he buried his chance into back of the net. The visitors would put tremendous pressure on the Mavs until the horn sounded ending regulation. Medaille had the better chances in the first overtime period while York got off four shots in the second extra stanza. All would be for naught as neither team could finish. The tie moves the Mavs to (2-0-1) on the year and they will host Wells College on Wednesday (9/9) at 7:00pm.
