Softball Back on Track with Sweep of Franciscan

Stahura_soft_08After dropping seven straight games the Medaille College softball team was in desperate need of a victory as they headed to Steubenville, Ohio to face AMCC foe Franciscan University.  The Lady Mavs played tremendously en route to a sweep of the Barons.  In the opening game Medaille upended Franciscan (13-4) with freshman Keeley John (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda) earning the win as she struck out seven.  Sophomore Carrie Stahura (Depew, NY/Depew)(pictured) was a force at the plate as she went (3 for 4) with a triple, two rbi, and a stolen base.  Sophomore Alyssa Zemla (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) belted a home run to aid in the victory.  (more…)

Melyssa Tollar

Melyssa Tollar (Sr. – Women’s Lacrosse – West Seneca, NY)

In her first game of the season Melyssa led the Lady Mavs with a hat trick in a tough loss at Alfred University. She increased her all time record of career goals scored to (82) with her three tallies. The Lady Mavs are (1-2) on the young season.

 

Ryan Murdie

Ryan Murdie (Jr. – Men’s Volleyball – Kenmore, NY)

Ryan was a dominant force in the NECVA Western Division Playoffs. He led the Mavs with (41) kills and posted (9) blocks defensively. The Mavs won their first two matches of the crossover tournament which qualified them for the NECVA Tournament which begins on Friday, April 3rd at 8:00pm vs. Baruch College. That tournament is being held at M.I.T..

NECVA Tournament Bracket Announced

IMG_5137The Medaille College men’s volleyball team qualified for the NECVA Tournament with a (2-1) weekend at the Divisional Playoffs.  Wins over Stevenson and Eastern Mennonite moved them to the Divisional Championship against Nazareth College, that was enough to move on to the NECVA Tournament.  The Mavs first round opponent will be #8 seed, Baruch College, whom they will face on Friday (4/3) at 8:00pm on the campus of M.I.T. The Mavs opened the 2009 season with a (3-1) win over Baruch, the Mavs are the tournament’s #9 seed (out of 16).  To see the complete tournament bracket click here.  The Mavs head to M.I.T. with a (15-14) record on the season.  The winner of the the NECVA Tournament receives an automatic bid to the Molten National Final Four.

Men’s Lacrosse Dominates Final Three Quarters

IMG_6076The Medaille College men’s lacrosse team played their first home game of the season this afternoon at the Nichols School, as they hosted Penn State-Abington.  The Mavs got out to a sluggish start as the visiting team netted three of the first four goals of the game and held a (3-1) advantage with (14:02) remaining in the second quarter.  The Mavs would go on a tear from that point on, netting twelve of the games final fourteen goals, en route to a (13-5) victory. Seven Mavs found the back of the net in this game with senior David Bennett (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) leading the way, he finished with (2) goals and (3) assists for five points.  (more…)

Volleyball Advances to NECVA Tournament

Maxwell_mvb_08The Medaille College men’s volleyball team needed a split on Saturday to advance to the NECVA Tournament and that is exactly what they got.  In the Western Division semifinals the Mavs swept Eastern Mennonite University (3-0); (30-25, 30-22, 30-23) which propelled them to the Divisional Championship match against #5 Nazareth College.  In that final match the host Golden Flyers were too much for the Mavs as they rolled to a (3-0); (30-17, 30-20, 30-26) victory over Medaille.  The Mavs are at (15-14) on the year and they will head to M.I.T. to take part in the NECVA Tournament.  The winner of the NECVA Tournament receives an automatic bid to the Molten Final Four.  The tournament seedings will be announced on Monday (3/30).

Softball Swept at La Roche

JohnThe Lady Mavs were looking to rebound as they headed to La Roche College for an AMCC doubleheader on Saturday.  The first game was a hard fought extra inning battle that saw Medaille fall (4-3), behind the strong pitching of freshman Keeley John (Gowanda, NY/Gowanda)(pictured) who struck out six while walking only one Redhawk batter.  In the second game the Lady Mavs were the victims of a perfect game as La Roche walked away with an (8-0) win.  The Lady Mavs are now (6-10) overall and (0-4) in AMCC play.  They will head to Franciscan University on Tuesday (3/31) for a 3:00pm doubleheader.

Women’s Lacrosse Falls at Alfred

Tollar_wlax_08The Medaille College women’s lacrosse was coming off its first win of the season as they headed to Alfred University to take on the Saxons on Saturday afternoon.  The task would prove to be too much as Alfred bested Medaille (21-5).  In the loss the Lady Mavs were led by senior Melyssa Tollar (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East)(pictured) who tallied three goals. The loss drops Medaille to (1-2) on the season, they will play in their first ever conference game on Thursday (4/2) as Keuka College comes into town for a 4:30pm faceoff.

Mavericks Earn Split Against La Roche

IMG_5873The Medaille Mavericks baseball team earned a split in its double header matchup against the La Roche College Redhawks Saturday afternoon. With the first game moved up to a start time of noon to avoid rain expected later in the day, the Mavericks fell behind early as La Roche bolted out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. The Mavs would attempt a comeback with a four run 6th inning including a two-run home run from junior Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) but it wasn’t enough as Medaille would drop the first game (11-7). The second game brought better results for the Mavericks as they jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Behind a strong pitching performance from junior pitcher Brian Vital (North Grafton, MA/Grafton) who pitched four innings allowing only one run while striking out five. La Roche didn’t falter easily as two runs scored in the final inning. Two La Roche base runners were left stranded to end the game as freshman pitcher Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame)(pictured) earned his second save on the season to preserve the win for the Mavericks with a score of (5-4). With the split, the Mavs now sit at (3-9) overall and (1-5) in AMCC play and will travel to Pitt-Greensburg next Saturday for a pair of games against the Bobcats with game time set for 1:00pm.

Volleyball Advances in NECVA Western Playoffs

Murdie_mvb_08The Medaille College men’s volleyball team kept its quest of an NECVA Tournament berth alive as they swept Stevenson University (3-0); (30-22, 30-25, 30-27) at the NECVA Western Division playoffs at Nazareth College. The Mavs were led by junior, standout Ryan Murdie (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East)(pictured) who finished with a team high (14) kills and (4) blocks.  Sophomore, setter, Ryan Maxwell (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) finished with (40) assists.  The win moves the Mavs over the (.500) mark as they are now (14-13) on the year.  It also earned them a spot in the divisional semifinals where they will face Eastern Mennonite University at noon today (3/28) at Nazareth College.

Softball Drops Two Tight Ones

StahuraThe Medaille College softball team took a break from its AMCC schedule to head to St. John Fisher College for a doubleheader.  In the first game the host Cardinals outlasted the Lady Mavs (5-2) despite the efforts of sophomore Carrie Stahura (Depew, NY/Depew)(pictured) who went (2 for 4) with a run and an rbi. In the second game, a (3-2) eight inning loss, the Lady Mavs were led by Brieanna Brink (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart)  who went (1 for 4) while crossing the plate twice. The Lady Mavs are now (6-8) on the season and they will head to La Roche College on Saturday (3/28) for a 1:00pm AMCC tilt.
