Women’s Basketball Victorious in Opener
The 2008-2009 women’s basketball season opened with a lot of questions as the Lady Mavs graduated four starters from a team that went to three straight NCAA tournaments. They passed their first test this evening as Medaille headed down route 198 and upended Buffalo State (57-51). The win was a total team effort and it saw some new faces shine as sophomore, Amanda Boron (Lockport, NY/Starpoint)(pictured) came off the bench and registered her first career double/double with (12) points and (14) rebounds. The Lady Mavs fell behind early (14-7) to the Bengals but they used some hot shooting to take a (35-24) lead at the break. The Lady Mavs shot (47.0%) from the floor in the first half. The second half saw the Lady Mavs struggle from the floor but strong defensive play and timely free throw shooting helped them prevail. Sophomore, Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) finished with (10) points and (11) boards and it was her free throw shooting down the stretch that led Medaille to victory. She connected on four straight free throws late that helped the Lady Mavs maintain their lead. Senior, guard, Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata) was ferocious on defense as she swiped (5) balls and poured in (12) points. The win gets the Lady Mavs started at (1-0) on the year and they will have little rest as they head to D’Youville for a 6:00pm tipoff tomorrow (11/18).
