November 25, 2008 By: Mike Carbery Category: Men's Basketball, Winter Sports No Comments →

Kopp_mbb_CazIf you like to watch up tempo, high scoring basketball, the Sullivan Center was the place to be Tuesday night.  As the Mavs and the Cazenovia Wildcats put on a back and forth thriller that saw Medaille escape with a (97-96) win on a three pointer with one second remaining on the clock.  The Mavs came into this game on a three game, season opening, win streak and it seemed that this game might easily be their fourth win as they jumped out to a quick (10-0) lead.  However, as they did all night long, Cazenovia showed its resiliency and their ability to hit big shots as they kept the game close, trailing (50-45) at the break.  As the second half began the Mavs extended their lead to nine points on a layup by Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) with (17:41) left on the clock, Hack finished with (14) points.  From that point on Cazenovia, senior, guard, Erik Sauer (Pennellville, NY/Phoenix) would take over the game as he scored (21) of his game high (33) points in the second half.  (more…)

November 25, 2008 By: Mike Carbery Category: Winter Sports, Women's Basketball No Comments →

Ferrucci_wbb_0708The Lady Mavs took to the home floor for the first time in the 2008-09 season as they hosted #5 ranked University of Rochester.  It was a tale of two halves as Medaille dictated play in the opening stanza, with Rochester closing out a (63-53) victory with a strong second half performance.  Senior, guard, Carissa Ferrucci (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata)(pictured) took control of the game early as she knocked down six of her first seven shots from the floor.  The Lady Mavs would take a (30-23) lead into the half with Ferrucci registering sixteen of those points.  Ferrucci would finish the day with a game high (18) points. The Yellowjackets came out of the locker room firing as senior, Julie Marriott (Fairport, NY/Fairport) opened the half with eleven straight points as Rochester went on a (21-5) run, she finished with a team high (17) points to go along with (10) boards.  The Mavs would give a strong effort to cut the (14) point Rochester lead to six with about seven minutes remaining.  However, some clutch shooting and late turnovers would seal the Lady Mavs fate. The loss is the first on the year for Medaille as they are now (4-1), while Rochester stays perfect at (3-0).

November 18, 2008 By: Mike Carbery Category: Men's Basketball, Winter Sports No Comments →

kopp_benThe Medaille College men’s basketball season opened on their home floor as SUNY Cobleskill came to the Sullivan Center for a non-conference game.  They would find out that the road can be a tough place as the Mavs rolled past them (70-32).  A combination of stifling defense and quality shooting led the Mavs to victory.  The first half was an epic struggle for Cobleskill as they only managed to score ten points, as they trailed (32-10) at the break.  Medaille shot (47.2%) from the floor for the game and they forced the Fighting Tigers into difficult shots all night long.  It was a total team effort for Medaille as (13 of 14) players found their way into the scoring ledger.  Junior, transfer, Ben Kopp (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville)(pictured) finished tied with a game high (11) points on (4 of 5) shooting, he also pulled down (5) boards.  Junior, Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) also tallied (11) points, while sophomore, Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) had a strong all around performance with (8) points, a game high (7) rebounds and (3) assists. The Mavs are (1-0) for the year and they will head across town to take part in the Ad Pro Sports Classic hosted by D’Youville College on Friday (11/21), they will take on Green Mountain College at 6:00pm.
