The Medaille College men’s soccer team hosted the nations sixth ranked team as Hobart College came to All High Stadium this evening. The Mavs had been dominant at home in their first five games but the Statesmen would escape Buffalo with a hard fought (1-0) win over Medaille. The mavs controlled play throughout much of this game and had several great scoring chances but they could not deliver. Perhaps the best chance came early in the second half as Medaille had a corner kick that was played to Kendell McFayden (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North)(pictured) who got a great touch on the ball but the Hobart goalie made a tremendous diving stop thwarting the Mavs chances. The winning goal came off a deflection that went right to the Hobart player who ripped a shot that freshman, keeper, Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) had no chance of stopping, he had four saves on the evening. The Mavs outshot Hobart (18-12). The loss ends a six game win streak for Medaille and it is the second (1-0) loss this season to a top ten team, they also dropped a (1-0) decision to #5 York College. The Mavs are now (6-5-0) overall as they head to Frostburg State to take on the Bobcats on Saturday (10/4) at 7:00pm.

The women’s soccer team followed up its thrilling double overtime victory over La Roche College with a (3-0) blanking of Alfred University. The win is the fourth in the Lady Mavs last five games as they inch closer to the (.500) mark. It was a great day for junior, forward, Danielle Radlich (Clarence, NY/Clarence)(pictured) who tallied all three goals for Medaille. She now has (9) on the season and (56) for her career. The first of her three scores came just (8:25) into play as she put the ball past the Saxon keeper off an assist from junior, Laura Freeman (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West). Radlich’s other two scores came off helpers from senior, Kelly Rosenthal (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek). The shutout was preserved by senior, keeper, Mattea Haessner (Moravia, NY/Moravia) who stopped all (4) shots on goal. The men’s soccer teams (0-4-0) start is a distant memory as the Mavs have used the lessons learned from their grueling road start to explode over the last six games. The latest victim was conference foe La Roche College who came into All High Stadium and was blitzed from the opening whistle as the Mavs scored early and often enroute to a (6-0) win over the Redhawks. The Mavs are unbeaten at home (5-0-0) and have outscored their opponents (35-1) at All High. This evening’s game was no different as the Mavs scored just (3:06) into the first half on a beautiful goal by Josh Meier (South Wales, NY/Holland) who blasted a shot past the La Roche keeper on a beautiful ball played by Scott Gentner (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe’s)(pictured), Gentner would also tally the games fourth goal. Despite being outshot by a considerable margin (15-7), the Lady Mavs capitalized on two great scoring opportunities to upend AMCC foe La Roche College (2-1) in double overtime. Both goals came off the foot of junior, Laura Freeman (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West)(pictured), the first evened the match at (1-1) as she beat the Redhawk keeper with (10:56) remaining in regulation off an assist from junior, Katy Schelble (Springville, NY/Springville Griffith). The teams would trade chances late but to no avail. The first overtime would come and go with no resolution. So the Lady Mavs headed into the second overtime period looking for a crucial win. The Redhawks would have two decent opportunities to score early in the second overtime period but the game would end with (4:51) remaining as Freeman scored on a breakaway that would seal the victory. The Lady Mavs have won three of their last four and they improve to (4-6-0) overall and stay unbeaten in conference play at (2-0-0). The Lady Mavs will host Alfred University on Tuesday (9/30) at 4:00pm.
