Men’s Soccer Drops Second Straight
For the second straight day the Medaille College men’s soccer team faced another national power as they took on 14th ranked Virginia Wesleyan at Christopher Newport University. The Mavs would suffer a second straight setback as they succumbed to the Blue Marlins (4-0). It was a game that saw Virginia Wesleyan tally two goals in each half as they outshot the Mavs (9-6). The loss drops Medaille to (0-2-0) on the young season. The Mavs will look for their first win on Tuesday (9/2) as they take on another national power, Fredonia State, on the road at 7:00pm. Things will not get easier for Medaille as they will head to York College to take on the fifth ranked Spartans next Saturday (9/6).
Women’s Volleyball Notches First Victories of 2008
After a tough (0-2) start for the Medaille College women’s volleyball team the Lady Mavs rallied on day two of the Spartan Classic to beat Cazenovia College (3-1). Once they tasted victory the Lady Mavs capped the day off with a second straight win as they outlasted Morrisville State (3-2) in what turned out to be a tough five set match. In their opening four games the Lady Mavs received strong play from Michele Burgstahler (Wilson, NY/Wilson)(pictured) who was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts. The back to back victories even the Lady Mavs record at (2-2) on the year and they will take to the floor again on Friday (9/5) as they will face King’s College at 6:00pm at the Muhlenberg College Tournament.
Women’s Soccer Rally Falls Short
After five minutes of play the Lady Mavs found themselves down (2-0) to Westminster College. They would fight back to tie the game at (2-2) with goals from Danielle Radlich (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Katy Schelble (Springville, NY/Springville-Griffith)(pictured). The host team would find the back of the net once more before the halftime whistle blew, as they led (3-2) at the break. The second half would prove to be the deciding stanza as Westminster tallied three more goals, including the games final marker with only eight seconds remaining, to finish with a (6-2) victory over Medaille. The loss drops the Lady Mavs to (0-2-0) on the season. Next up for Medaille is their home opener on Saturday (9/6) as they take on the Presidents from Washington & Jefferson College at 6:00pm at All High Stadium.
Men’s Soccer Falls in OT
Despite scoring the games first goal at the (63:30) mark, the Medaille College men’s soccer team dropped a (2-1) heartbreaking loss in overtime to Christopher Newport University. The Mavs received a goal from sophomore, Eric Schnirel (West Amherst, NY/Sweet Home)(pictured) off an assist by junior, Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) (18:30) into the second half of play. The Captains would counter (4:38) later before ending the game after four minutes of extra time. The Captains are coming off a 2007 season that saw them advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks continue their brutal 2008 season today as they will face a littany of Division III national powers. Next up for the Mavs is Virginia Wesleyan College whom they will face at 5:30pm tomorrow (8/30) on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
Women’s Soccer Falls in Opener
The Medaille College women’s soccer team fell in their opener as Grove City College upended the Lady Mavs (8-2). In the loss the Lady Mavs were led by standout, forward, Danielle Radlich (Clarence, NY/Clarence)(pictured) who paced Medaille with (1) goal and (1) assist. The Lady Mavs fell behind at the (8:33) mark before Dani Radlich tied the game with (27:00) minutes left in the first half. Grove City would pour it on after that as they cruised to victory. The Lady Mavs will look to rebound as they head to Westminster College tomorrow for a 3:30pm start.
Women’s Volleyball Struggles on Opening Day
The Medaille College women’s volleyball team took the floor at the Spartan Invitational hosted by D’Youville College with new life as first year head coach, Jake Beiter, was at the helm. The upstart Lady Mavs fell in their inaugural matches, losing to Hilbert (1-3) and host D’Youville (0-3). The Lady Mavs will look to bounce back against Cazenovia College tomorrow (8/30) at 10:00am.
Boughton & Mavs Receive Preseason Honors in Men’s Soccer
The AMCC preseason rankings came out and the Mavericks were selected as the favorites to win the conference title. The Mavs are coming off a year in which they captured their third straight regular season title but fell in the championship game. Junior, Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster), was selected as the preseason player of the year. Boughton was the AMCC Co-Player of the Year in 2007 and was a first team regional All American while finishing 2nd in the nation in assists per game. The Mavericks will open the 2008 season at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA on Friday, August 29th at 7:30pm.
