The Medaille College men’s basketball team opened play in the AD PRO Sports Classic as they hosted NAIA school Paul Smith’s College. All seventeen players for Medaille would see significant minutes as they rolled past the overmatched Bobcats (87-38). The Mavs would never trail in this one as fourteen players would fine their way onto the scoring ledger. Leading the way were a pair of guards as senior Mike Berkun (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) and junior Ricky Reed (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta)(pictured) each tallied (12) points. Berkun connected on (4 of 6) from the floor while Reed knocked down (6 of 8). The Mavs dominated the glass as well, outrebounding Paul Smith’s (62-27) with sophomore transfer David Shuey (Newfane, NY/Newfane) pulling down a game high (13) points, seven of which came off the offensive glass. Freshman Anthony Battaglia (Lancaster, NY/Depew) came off the bench and dropped in (10) points on (4 of 6) shooting, including knocking down both of his attempts from behind the arc. The Mavs pushed the pace the entire evening as they outscored the Bobcats (22-0) in transition and dominated in the paint, holding a (58-14) edge there. The win moves Medaille to (2-0) on the young season and they will host Wells College on Saturday (11/21) in game #3 of the tournament. The Medaille College men’s basketball team is coming off the best season in school history and they added another notch to their belt as they defeated Geneseo State for the first time in program history with a (83-77) victory in the Sullivan Center this evening. The Blue Knights handed the Mavs an eight point loss last season and Medaille avenged that defeat in this game. There were points in this game where it seemed the Mavs would run away with the victory as they stretched their lead to as many as (16) points with (15:14) remaining in the second half. However, Geneseo would keep clawing back as they narrowed the gap to as low as six points with just (1:14) remaining before Medaille put the game away. Leading the charge for Medaille was the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year, Keith Hack (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay)(pictured) who poured in a team high (19) points while connecting on half of his eight attempts from behind the arc. Senior Mike Berkun (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) was (3 for 4) from the floor, including (3 for 3) from three point range and a perfect (4 for 4) from the free throw line en route to a (13) point, (2) rebound, (2) assist and (1) steal evening. Junior Ron Malicki (Machias, NY/Pioneer) was tremendous from the charity stripe as he connected on (11 of 12) free throws, finishing with (17) points. The Mavs are (1-0) on the season and they will host Paul Smith’s College on Thursday (11/19) at 7:00pm as part of the Ad Pro Sports Classic.

The Medaille College women’s basketball team got their season started on the right note with an (80-48) dismantling of crosstown rival Buffalo State College. The Lady Mavs jumped out quickly as they held a (15-0) edge five minutes into the game and they never looked back. The Bengals would trim the lead to six with (6:09) remaining in the first half before the Lady Mavs would explode en route to the (32) point victory. Leading the way for Medaille was junior Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park)(pictured) who had a game high (19) points while connecting on (7 of 13) from the floor, she also stripped away three steals on the defensive end of the floor. Junior point guard Kacie Mills (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) chipped in with (14) points and (3) assists as she knocked down seven of her eight attempts from the charity stripe. Freshman Susanne Black (Houghton, NY/Fillmore) showed her promise as she scored (11) points while pulling down (8) boards. The Lady Mavs open the season at (1-0) and they will head to Boston, MA to take on Fitchburg State on Friday (11/20) at 6:00pm as part of the Endicott College Tournament.

The Mavericks lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament today, falling to (#10) Carnegie Mellon (1-0) in Pittsburgh, PA. The Mavericks came into the match with an 11 game shut-out streak (1,010 minutes) and added another (67) minutes until the Tartans were awarded a penalty kick and senior Ryan Browne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) kicked it past sophomore Ryan Goettel (Syracuse, NY / Cicero-North Syracuse) for the lone goal of the game and the winning score. Uncharacteristically, the Mavericks were outshot in the contest (15-7) and only registered one of their seven shots on goal. The loss ends Medaille’s bid for a National Championship, and is the first time in school history that Carnegie Mellon has advanced to the Sweet 16. The Mavericks had a historic season in which it saw its captain senior Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY / Lancaster) become the NCAA Division III all-time assists leader (82), Head Coach Dan Krzyzanowicz win his (100) game of his head coaching career, and in which the Mavs won their first ever NCAA tournament game. The Mavs finished the 2009 season with a teriffic (18-3-2) record.

Senior Laura Freeman (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) (pictured) tallied her (19th) goal of the season; however, it was not enough as the Lady Mavericks (10-9-2) fell (3-1) to Brockport (12-4-3, 5-2-2) in the ECAC Upstate Championship game Sunday at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport. Senior Junior Jess Bush (Dryden, NY/Dryden) scored in the second minute of play for the Golden Eagles, as Brockport would take a (1-0) lead early. Brockport would add another goal from senior Michelle Gibaud (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia), who was named tournament most valuable player, just after halftime. Medaille would cut the lead in half as Freeman buried home a free kick of the foot of junior Mary Smialek (Girard, PA/Girard) in the 67th minute. However, that would be as close as Medaille would get as one minute later Courtney Belding (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) would ice it for Brockport. The Lady Mavs seemed to cut the lead down to one again in the 78th minute; however, the goal was nullified by an offsides call, and that would end the Medaille comeback just short. Junior Alexa Wisel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) made (11) saves in the loss as Medaille was outshot (25-6) by the Lady Golden Eagles.

It was just a matter of time before the Medaille College men’s soccer team (18-2-2) would breakthrough in the NCAA Tournament. In their fourth trip to the Dance the Mavs continued their stellar play with a (3-0) blanking of Denison University (12-5-3). This game started much like their first round game in 2008 as sophomore Alexander Rouse (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) blasted home his (17th) goal of the season on a beautiful through ball that was played to him from Gary Boughton (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) just (3:13) into play, giving the Mavs a (1-0) lead. Rouse scored early in the 2008 game as well. The Boughton assist stretches his NCAA Career record in that category to (82). The outcome would be much more favorable this time as the Mavs were able to hold off the Big Red. Read the rest of this entry →

It was a great day for Medaille College soccer. The men’s team won its first ever NCAA Tournament game and then the Lady Mavs went out and got their first every ECAC Tournament win as they bested Sage College (2-0) at Brockport State. The Lady Mavs got on the board in the 33rd minute when Mary Smialek (Girard, PA/Girard)(pictured) drove home a penalty kick. Then senior Laura Freeman (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) registered her (18th) goal of the year early in the second half as she rocketed a shot from 15 yards out into the top right corner of the goal. From that point on the Lady Mavs locked Sage College down. Junior goalkeepers Brittany DeBole (Rochester, NY/Northstar Academy) and Alexa Wisel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) split the shutout, with Wisel stopping both of the Sage College shots on net. The win gets Medaille into double digits in the win column as they are now (10-8-2) overall. They will face Brockport State tomorrow (11/15) at noon in the ECAC Upstate Championship game.
